If the conservatives insist in leading us into a war, they should at
least follow their own principles as they do so. This would mean putting
the whole thing on a pay-as-you-go basis - which is to say paying for
conflict at the gas pump. During the earlier iteration of the Gulf War I
figured that about $15 a gallon would do the trick. Surely the oil
industry is pure capitalism at its best and ought to act that way by
paying a user fee to the Pentagon for its war, which it can then
retrieve from its customers. And if the latter are not quite as
patriotic as they were when the true cost of war was better hidden, it
will merely prove again the omnipotent magic of market forces.- Sam
