MEDIA WAR COMES TO MEDIACHANNEL.ORG: OUR SITE IS UNDER ATTACK!
Perhaps it is a coincidence, perhaps not, but on the very week that MediaChannel is offering information on the protests against the media role in the Iraq War, and as our traffic grows, parties unknown are targeting the site with a flood of vicious technical attacks designed to bring our website down.

APPEALING FOR A MEDIA DISCOURSE
When we first discussed the media protest day, I felt we should try to do more than protest. We should engage: meet with the media executives who meet regularly with politicians, share our concerns, give the anti-war movement a chance to speak their truths to media power. It was one of those ideas that is easier said than done.

WHEN SECRETS RULE
More than anything, critics of the Bush administration are decrying its habit - particularly since Sept. 11 - of conducting state affairs under an unyielding cover of executive privilege and a "we know best" philosophy that precludes virtually any outside influence or advice.

MEDIA MATTERS: NATIONAL DYSFUNCTION
Let me tell you about a truly unhealthy relationship. The symptoms are well-documented: One partner skulks about suspiciously, distrustful, secretive, evasive, conversing with others out of earshot, making important decisions unilaterally, spying on the other partner, retaliating in anger when questioned or challenged. This is what's going on right now between American citizens and their government, and as in all dysfunctional relationships, communication is the problem.

GOOD MOURNING, VIETNAM: PART II
A conference this weekend in Boston on Vietnam, featuring former officials named Kissinger, Carter, Haig and others, inevitably made profound links to the current Iraq conflict. But perhaps the most chilling words belonged to President Johnson, on tape from 1966: "I know we oughtn't to be there, but I can't get out."

MEDIA LIES AND HYPOCRISY IN WAKE OF MILOSEVIC'S DEATH
The death of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic in his jail cell at the Hague on Saturday has unleashed a torrent of historical distortions and outright lies that echo the propaganda campaign waged more than seven years ago to justify the US-NATO war against the country.

WHY NEWSPAPERS MUST ASK SOME SEARCHING QUESTIONS
The World Association of Newspapers is portraying Google as an enemy of news. I wouldn't say that. I'd call Google something between a necessary evil and a friend - and if news organisations are smart, they will learn how to befriend the beast.

THE EROSION OF FREE SPEECH
You've got to fight. It's the only conclusion I can draw as I see the renewed erosion of our freedom to discuss the Middle East. The most recent example - and the most shameful - is the cowardly decision of the New York Theatre Workshop to cancel the Royal Court's splendid production of My Name Is Rachel Corrie, a story of the brave young American woman who travelled to Gaza to protect innocent Palestinians and who stood in front of an Israeli bulldozer in an attempt to prevent the driver from destroying a Palestinian home.
