Please forward to your native artist contacts. This is inside information I came by from a Folk Life board member.

Please get this out to all the native visual and performing artists you know in Indian Country.

The board of the Folk Life Festival of Seattle has chosen the theme of Urban Native for the 2008 festival that comes up on Memorial Day weekend, at the end of May. Second only to Bumpershoot in attendance, it draws some 250,000 people in four days. They feature ethnic acts and contemporary musicians from cultures all over the world. They also have a highly competitive art jury system that assures a good mix of reliably high quality work. I had my coastal pottery booth there in 1993 and sold my whole winter production in four days. If I'd had more, I would have sold more. Yuki Adams cleans up there because she is often one of the only representatives of T'lingit style art . Suffice to say, it takes a big investment up front to prepare for such a show. Many attendees like to pay by credit card for larger purchases so merchant accounts for credit/debit cards can double the volume of sales for such an event.

The jury for visual art is in early January. You can do it in person, or with jpg pictures. But the deadline is firm. One might wonder why I am aggressively sharing the information with other artists, rather than capitalizing on it for myself? I think globally and act tribally. Folks who would prefer to share a booth to share the burden of a test of endurance that a four day show can be, must still jury individually.
So get it together everyone. Let's give them something to talk about, and shop!

All the information you need to apply is on their website:
http://www.nwfolklife.org/

Let's give those judges something to consider. Your tribe may see fit to sponsor your booth if they can see that it can be an excellent promotion for tourism and business development. I recall getting solicted by 20+ galleries and shops from that one show.
This is a great chance to show the greater Seattle area how diverse are the native cultures in Indian Country.
And the festival needs a ton of volunteers too, so sign up and be present.
That was a lot of fun too.

See you there, one way or the other.
