RELIGION & ITS ALTERNATIVES

MOST BIBLE STUDIES IN TEXAS HIGH SCHOOLS ARE DEVOTIONAL, NOT ACADEMIC

AP - The majority of Bible courses being offered as electives at Texas
high schools are devotional and sectarian in their approach and do not
teach about the Bible in a historical or literary context as required
under state law a new study has found. The San Antonio Express-News
reported in a story on its Web site on Sept. 12 that the yearlong study
by the Texas Freedom Network found that in most instances the courses
fail to meet minimal academic standards for teacher qualifications,
curriculum and academic rigor. Most of the courses promote one faith
perspective over all others and push an ideological agenda that is
hostile to religious freedom, science and public education, according to
the 76-page report, "Reading, Writing and Religion," released yesterday.

KATHERINE HARRIS: IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT 'SIN' MEANS

SARA LUBBES, HERALD TRIBUNE, FL - Religion and politics intersected
again Wednesday for Senate candidate Katherine Harris. At a meeting with
the West Palm Beach Jewish Community Relations Council, a group that
represents one of Florida's largest Jewish communities, Harris tried to
ease concerns over her recent comments -- including a statement that "if
you're not electing Christians" then "in essence you are going to
legislate sin." The meeting was closed to the public, and attendees said
they were not allowed to comment on what Harris discussed because of
rules placed on nonprofit organizations. But the Longboat Key Republican
congresswoman said she sent the message that she embraces the Jewish
faith. "Everything I believe is predicated on what they (Jews) believe,"
she said. . . She said she set the record straight in her meeting with
West Palm Beach Jewish leaders and that none of the 30 or so people in
the room seemed angry. . .

BRAINWASHING KIDS FOR JESUS

DAN HARRIS, ABC - Speaking in tongues, weeping for salvation, praying
for an end to abortion and worshipping a picture of President Bush --
these are some of the activities at Pastor Becky Fischer's Bible camp in
North Dakota, "Kids on Fire," subject of the provocative new
documentary, "Jesus Camp.". . . "I want to see them as radically laying
down their lives for the gospel as they are in Palestine, Pakistan and
all those different places," Fisher said. "Because, excuse me, we have
the truth.". . . "A lot of people die for God," one camper said, "and
they're not afraid.". . . "We're kinda being trained to be warriors,"
said another, "only in a funner way."
