Here Comes the "War Czar" -- What Does That Mean? (128 comments )

ABC News is reporting that Lt. General Douglas Lute is going to be named the White House "War Czar."

Those of us who have a rudimentary understanding of the military and Constitution know that there is already a war czar. The position has a different name, though -- commander in chief, or as the president says, 'the commander guy.'

Whatever the name of the position is, this proves the president is throwing in the towel when it comes to directing the military, and is giving up his Constitutional role.

Will that improve things? Tough to tell. The troops are now depending on Lt. Gen. Lute to do something the president wouldn't -- listen to commanders who are telling him we need more diplomacy, not escalation. It's now up to Lt. Gen. Lute to undo the president's failed policies in Iraq, and bring a heavy dose of diplomacy in the region, so we can begin to get our troops out of the Iraqi religious civil war

In August 2005, Lute told the Financial Times, "We believe at some point, in order to break this dependence on the... coalition, you simply have to back off and let the Iraqis step forward... You have to undercut the perception of occupation in Iraq. It's very difficult to do that when you have 150,000-plus, largely western, foreign troops occupying the country."

It certainly seems that Lt. General Lute understands things much better than the president. For the sake of our nation and military, let's hope he does.
