Aircraft repair technicians in Maryland, news writers in New Jersey and stagehands in Ohio are among the latest workers winning a voice at work and the right to bargain for a better life with a union contract.
At the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland, some 770 repair technicians voted to join Machinists (IAM) District Lodge 4. The workers, employed by DynCorp International, say their biggest concerns are having a voice on the job and the respect that goes along with that, rising health care costs and unpredictable wage increases.
Meanwhile in Yakima, Wash., 128 workers at Filtrona Extrusion Co., voted to join IAM District Lodge 751. North of the border in Ontario, Canada, 25 workers at the Courtyard by Marriot in Brampton and 20 workers at the Kingsway Arms Retirement Home in Clarington voted to join IAM Local Lodges 2243 and 901.
More than 300 workers in New Jersey and Florida chose to join the Communications Workers (CWA) in two majority sign-up wins and an election victory. In majority sign-up, an employer agrees to recognize the workers’ choice to join a union if a majority signs union authorization cards. At Dow Jones Newswires, 220 reporters, editors and technical, sales and support workers won a voice with the Independent Association of Publishers’ Employees (IAPE), a Newspaper Guild-CWA (TNG-CWA) affiliate. The workers at the company’s facility in Jersey City, N.J., join some 1,800 other Dow Jones employees who already are IAPE members, including Wall Street Journal and Barron’s magazine workers.
In another majority sign-up win in New Jersey, workers at AT&T’s Local Services customer service maintenance center in Monmouth gained representation with CWA Local 1150. The 91 workers gained union representation under the union’s card check and neutrality agreement with AT&T. Also, 12 workers who install and Service GE appliances along Florida’s east coast voted to join IUE-CWA Local 712.
In Columbus, Ohio, 35 workers at Associations, Conventions, Trade Shows Inc., voted to join Theatrical Stage Employes (IATSE) Local 12.
In other organizing news, more than 80 pilots and flight engineers at Capital Cargo International Airlines in Orlando, Fla., voted to merge their independent union with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). Also, The Aviators Group (T.A.G.), which represents some 250 pilots and flight engineers at Evergreen International Airlines, announced its endorsement of a merger proposal with ALPA.
