Timing of Recent Terrotist bust

Iraq is a full blown disaster-- civil war, more deaths than when
Saddam was in charge, exploding gasoline prices... Israel is a
diplomatic disaster. It's clear that Bush has failed to deal with
the middle east in a responsible way. The latest polls show that
the public sees the DEMOCRATS as better on terror.

The Lieberman defeat is a clear, CLEAR message that the war and a
relationship with Bush was deadly for Lieberman.

FACT: The NYC police have known about the liquid bomb terrorist
plot for months.

New York's Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the NYPD had known about it
for months. The government reassured people its explosive testing
machines could spot explosives. That is not true. As the Washington
Post reported Friday morning, ....the so-called puffer machines
cannot detect well-packaged liquid explosives, nor were they
designed to identify common bomb-making components such as acetone
or hydrogen peroxide…."

"The essence of the issue," the anonymous official told the
Post, "comes back to: Do we have the technical capabilities of
detecting those particular elements, and are our procedures adequate
to prevent those elements from getting onto the plane? In both of
those answers, no...the only course of action we have is to abolish
those liquids and gels."

James Jay Carafano, senior fellow at Heritage Foundation in
Washington and an expert on domestic security, said that in the last
year, officials at the highest levels of the department recognized
the seriousness of the threat posed by liquid explosives and had
been pushing aggressively to introduce equipment that could help.

But no such devices are ready to be rolled out.

Terrorist gangs have long been aware of the potential of combining
common ingredients including liquids to create homemade liquid
explosives. It would only need a small spark to explode it.

Police believe acetone peroxide triacetone triperoxide (TATP) was
the home-made explosive used in London on July 7 last year in the
attacks that killed 56 people, including four suicide bombers, on
Tube trains and a bus.

TATP is made with commonly available chemicals such as sulphuric
acid, which is used to clean drains, and hydrogen peroxide, which is
used in hair dyes, and acetone.

So why divulge the names of 19 of the accused "terrorists?" This
goes totally against all the rules of espionage and intelligence
operations. It surely blew the covers of the undercover agents,
probably among those 19 named "terrorists" in an effort to
camouflage their identities.

The right wing echo chamber starts saying "Lieberman loss shows a
softening of the Democratic position on terrorism". Joe Lieberman
loses on Tuesday, Tony Snow suggests that Democrats are getting
weaker on terrorism on Wednesday, and there is a huge bust with
massively intrusive new security measures and red alert status on
Thursday.

Whether we like it or not, terrorist attacks on Americans are now
part of the global reality. Many places around the globe have had to
deal with a similar reality for years. India, Ireland, England,
Spain, Russia, to name a few. In many cases, these societies have
pulled together and not allowed isolated acts of violence to tear at
their fiber.

Like disease and the forces of nature, it's a risk that we have to
rationally come to terms with. The government's responsibility is to
make sure that fear and terror are not disproportionate to the
reality of the situation.
