From Joe Garnett:
Dear Friends and Family,
It took a long time, but it finally came... I think this is one of my
best poems...
Hope you like it.

FOR MY DEAD BROTHER
I could see the silences coming on
before I could hear them--
Like great expanses of thunderstorms
so far off you couldn't hear
the thunderclap. Like the cut
of a knife, just before
you feel the pain. A wall of silence
you see coming in
like a large misunderstanding
between friends.
Like the ringing in the ears
you hear when not even a bird song
is in the air, like the soundless
skip between heartbeats.
Like the anticipated silence you hear
just before a huge explosion.
At first you're not listening for it,
then, it's there, like someone
wire-tapping into your ears.
Like leaving the high diving board,
the silence before you hit the water.
Between the click and when
the bullet explodes
tearing into the skull.
Never hearing the last sound
on earth.
