In the world's biggest economy one in eight Americans and almost one in four
African-Americans lived in poverty last year, the US Census Bureau said on
Tuesday. The survey also showed 15.9 percent of the population, or 46.6 million,
had no health insurance, up from 15.6 percent in 2004 and the fifth increase in
a row.

Americans Without Health Benefits May Have Set Record in 2005

The number of Americans without health insurance probably rose to a record in
2005 as medical costs increased three times as fast as wages, according to
forecasts for a Census Bureau report today. The total has climbed every year
since President George W. Bush took office, a point Democrats are likely to
seize on in this year's congressional election.
