American should hear.
His point was that we have a false idea that democracy can be
established any where in the world. He pointed out (and I agree)
that before a liberal democracy is possible, the people in a civil
society have to believe in the rights of their neighbors, the
liberty of their neighbors.
He stated that if the US pulls out of Iraq, the 2 percent of the
Iraqis who are Christian, will be killed by the Muslim extremists.
The number of Christians seeking to emigrate is unknown, but the
estimated 800,000 that live in Iraq today represent a marked decline
from the 1987 census that registered 1.4 million Iraqi-Christians.

John Agresto talked about and read from his book,
Mugged By Reality ; The Liberation of Iraq and the Failure of Good
Intentions
On the deepest level, this is a book about education, about
politics, about culture, and about religion. It is a book
about `lessons learned' – but not lesson learned regarding Iraq as
much as lessons learned about America, democracy, fanaticism, and
about our own natures.

John Agresto gave the final luncheon keynote speech at the Global
Democracy Conference on U.S. policy in Iraq. Dr. Agresto was a
member of the Coalition Provisional Government in Iraq and assisted
in the drafting of the new constitution. In his remarks he focused
on mistakes made in U.S. policy toward Iraq, the roots of sectarian
violence (terrorism) and threats to security in the region, the
potential for political cooperation among Iraqi factions, and the
future of democracy in the region. He also answered questions from
the audience.
