GREAT MOMENTS IN POLITICS

PETER CARLSON, WASHINGTON POST - Maybe Vincent J. Fumo should not be
enshrined in the nonexistent Crooked Pol Hall of Fame. After all, Fumo
hasn't been convicted of any of the 139 counts of fraud, conspiracy and
obstruction of justice detailed in the amazing 267-page indictment
handed up this month by a federal grand jury in Philadelphia. Fumo, who
is a Pennsylvania state senator, has not only denied the charges in the
indictment, he has also denied several charges that were not in the
indictment.. . .

One Senate employee allegedly organized Fumo's fundraisers and paid his
personal bills. Another allegedly cleaned his house. Three allegedly
drove him around. Several allegedly worked on his farm, mucking stalls
and mending fences. Others allegedly drove his dirty shirts to be
laundered and fixed his leaky toilets and drove his car to and from
Martha's Vineyard every summer while he flew back and forth in a private
plane. . .

Sometimes, Fumo allegedly saw the need to supplement his Senate staff by
hiring outside contractors and, needless to say, paying them with public
money. One of these contractors was a private investigator whose duties
allegedly included spying on rival politicians and shadowing Fumo's
ex-wife and two of his ex-girlfriends and their new boyfriends. Fumo
also allegedly assigned the gumshoe to perform surveillance on a
political sign to make sure it wasn't stolen -- for 22 state-funded
hours. . .

The indictment quotes an e-mail written by one of the Senate employees
in Fumo's Philadelphia office, complaining bitterly that the Senate
employees in Fumo's Harrisburg office just didn't understand how hard
the Philly staffers worked: "I would like to see their reaction when
they are told to drive cars back from Martha's Vineyard on a Sunday. . .
. I would like to see their reaction when they are told to drive people
to get their hair done. . . . I would like to see their reaction if they
had to wrap 150 VJF bobblehead dolls."

WONDER WHAT MITT ROMNEY THINKS ABOUT THIS

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY EAGLE - Brigham Young University in Utah has blocked
Youtube.com from its server. The Mormon school blocks all Web sites it
deems to contain "pornography, adult content and violence" in order to
"provide a safer environment when browsing the Internet by preventing
access to inappropriate Web sites." Why does BYU feel the need to
protect its students from the evils of You Tube? No one uses You Tube to
get porn; most people just use it to watch reruns of "America's Next Top
Model" or the "Charlie the Unicorn" movie. . . No matter what one's
religious beliefs, blocking You Tube at college is like home-schooling
children to keep them from hearing bad words; they're eventually going
to be exposed to the material you're trying to protect them from.

OUTLYING PRECINCTS

US NEWS & WORLD REPORT - If you're wondering why, despite his denials,
Al Gore remains the most talked about non-presidential candidate, it's
this: His friends think he's done so well in the private world that he
could bankroll the start of his own 2008 bid. . . Said former campaign
manager Donna Brazile: "If Al Gore wants to run, he will come with all
the means necessary. Al Gore is someone who can pull it off at half
time."

BROADCASTING & CABLE - According to a telephone survey of adults
18-plus, 38% said [Anna Nicole] Smith was the name they had heard the
most about in the news lately, with 28% naming Bush; they were followed
by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton at 3% apiece and Britney Spears and
Nancy Pelosi at 1%. An "other" category got 9%, while "no answer" was in
third place at 17%. . . According to the Pew interest poll, more people
were interested in the Smith story (16%) than in the 2008 presidential
campaign (9%), possible war with Iran (6%) or North Korea's nuclear
weapons (2%). Still, for the seventh week in a row, the story the survey
respondents said they were most interested in was Iraq at 26%.

BLOG DAMNIT - If the junior senator from NY was mislead by President
Bush and officials in his administration and so cast her vote in favor
of authorizing the invasion of Iraq, why would anyone want to see her
move from the Senate to the Presidency, where she would need to discern
the ambitions and intentions of politicians far more wily than those who
made her do their bidding in the Iraq matter?
