WE RECENTLY NOTED that, just in time for the election, Hillary Clinton
has discovered she's always been religious. But that isn't quite fair,
as the religious website, Cutting Edge, notes, citing a Providence
Journal Bulletin article from 1996: "Hillary Rodham Clinton said
yesterday her imaginary conversations with Eleanor Roosevelt were merely
an 'intellectual exercise' ... Trying to douse what she called
'sensational' speculation, the first lady rejected inferences that
psychic researcher Jean Houston, who led her in several White House
sessions, was her 'spiritual adviser'.
"In a written statement, Mrs. Clinton was firm in her denial that there
were any psychic or religious overtones to the sessions. 'The bottom
line is: I have no spiritual advisers or any other alternatives to my
deeply held Methodist faith and traditions upon which I have relied
since childhood.' "
"Mrs. Clinton met with Houston several times from late 1994 until March
of this year, according to a new book [by Bob Woodward, 'The Choice']
that says Houston led the first lady through imaginary conversations
with her hero, Mrs. Roosevelt and Indian leader ... Ghandi ... Mrs.
Clinton said she engaged in hours of 'freewheeling discussions' with
Houston."
In further explanation the Journal Bulletin noted that "Jean Houston
says that the exercises she coached Mrs. Clinton in are much like what
is practiced at many corporations."
The Cutting Edge that explains why it doesn't approve of this sort of
thing, with which we won't bore you, but adds some interesting notes
about Jean Houston:
"Houston is one of the more popular New Age leaders today. She has
written eleven books, and has coauthored four more. She is co-director
of the Foundation For Mind Research New Agers have always been entranced
with the workings of the human mind, and have always sought to
understand it and control it. They subscribe great "potential" to the
human mind, even believing that the human mind can create solid matter
simply by proper focusing. In other words, they can create matter
through thought. Now, that puts mankind on the level of the Biblical
God, Who simply spoke and this universe was created."
At her site, "Jean Houston proves to be purely a flaming New Age
Adherent. She offers Astrology, her own New Age Online Magazine, called
'The Monthly Aspectarian', Astro Weather, and hyperlinks to other New
Age Sites. I clicked on the June, 1996, issue of The Monthly Aspectarian
and discovered some very revealing articles:
"'From the Heart -- From Toleration To Embrace' -- This is exactly what
we Christians have been warning about for decades now: What one
generation tolerates, the next generation embraces. . . 'Spiritual
Medicine' -- New Agers claim the ability to heal with the mind . . .
"Houston aided Hillary to get into the properly advanced state of
'Altered Consciousness' so she could contact Eleanor Roosevelt. Eleanor
Roosevelt is that 'ordinarily hidden reality' whom Hillary wanted to
contact. Houston simply aided her in that quest. . . .
"Why would she need Houston? Since Jean Houston is a "more advanced
soul" along the path to human enlightenment, perhaps Hillary wanted her
to be there to aid in Hillary's conversation with Eleanor. Or, perhaps
Hillary wanted Houston's help in communicating more effectively with her
'Guiding Spirit,' Eleanor, just as Houston recounted in her book, above.
. .
"A spiritual battle is under way for your soul as we get close to this
New World Order, but it will be nothing compared to the battle that will
commence once the Antichrist makes his appearance. Are you spiritually
ready? Is your family? Are you adequately protecting your loved ones?"
We don't actually know a good answer to that, we don't know where
Marianne Williamson stands on all this, and we can't think what Hillary
Clinton and Eleanor Roosevelt had to talk about, save the unfaithfulness
of their husbands. But it should make an interesting debate topic.
