FURTHERMORE. . .

PR DAILY - SML Strategic Media, the Washington, D.C. PR and editorial
shop, placed a four-page advertorial in the September/October Foreign
Affairs, the high-brow political journal, extolling progress made in
Kazakhstan under the leadership of Nursultan Nazarbayev." But Gregoire
de Bourgues, who coordinated the "advertorial," was stabbed to death in
Kazakhstan while doing research for it. According to O'Dwyer's, "An
official at Kazakhstan's Journalists in Danger organization suspects
that de Bourgues may have uncovered information about the recent murders
of two prominent opposition leaders." Kazakh president Nazarbayev will
"visit the White House later this year, and spend some time at the Bush
family compound in Maine." The Washington Post reports that Nazarbayev
"has banned opposition parties, intimidated the press and profited from
his post. ... But he also sits atop massive oil reserves that have
helped open doors in Washington."

WASHINGTON WIRE - Late Friday afternoon, a federal judge in the district
of Arizona dismissed charges against two humanitarian volunteers
indicted last summer for conspiring to transport three ailing illegal
migrants for medical attention. The defendants - Shanti Sellz and Daniel
Strauss, both 23 at the time of arrest - had encountered the migrants
two days after they had entered the U.S. and set out for a makeshift
medical clinic at a church in Tucson, Ariz., about 60 miles north of the
border. A Border Patrol agent pulled them over and arrested them about
20 miles into the trip. The volunteers' organization, No More Deaths,
and other humanitarian groups had engaged in discussions with local
Border Patrol officials since at least 2002 to establish when volunteers
could legally transport migrants for medical attention. As a result of
those discussions, federal district judge Raner C. Collins found the
defendants could have reasonably believed they would not face arrest so
long as they followed the protocol No More Deaths had disclosed to the
Border Patrol.

DAVID PRICE, COUNTERPUNCH - Most of [Edward Said's FBI file] documents
surveillance campaigns of his legal, public work with American-based
Palestinian political or pro-Arab organizations, while other portions of
the file document the FBI's ongoing investigations of Said as it
monitored his contacts with other Palestinian-Americans. That the FBI
should monitor the legal political activities and intellectual forays of
such a man elucidates not only the FBI's role in suppressing democratic
solutions to the Israeli and Palestinian problems, it also demonstrates
a continuity with the FBI's historical efforts to monitor and harass
American peace activists.

BOSTON GLOBE, BRATTLEBORO, VT - Complaints about young people who spend
time in downtown naked have prompted the Select Board to explore an
anti-nudity ordinance. Groups of young people have been congregating in
a downtown parking lot and enjoying the warm summer weather without
clothing, and that bothers some local residents. . . Vermont has no law
against nudity, though some cities and towns ban it by ordinance.News
that the Select Board had asked Town Attorney Robert Fisher to research
a possible local ordinance drew a protest of sorts Friday, as five young
men gathered downtown and stripped their clothes off in protest. . .
With no law to enforce, Police Chief John Martin was taking a laid-back
approach. "What's the harm?" Martin asked. "It's a problem to the extent
that it bothers people, but we've always had it here.". . . "We get
calls and we check out what's going on. Even though there's often no
criminal violation, we want to be sure there isn't a confrontation. Or
that someone is not emotionally disturbed."

POLITICS 1 - In the aftermath of the Democratic National Committee vote
to add two states -- Nevada and South Carolina -- to the early voting
calendar for the 2008 Democratic Presidential calendar, party and state
leaders in New Hampshire are left to discern how to respond to this
challenge to their prized "first-in-the-nation" primary status. State
law dictates the NH contest be held 'at least seven days prior to any
other similar contest.' The Iowa caucuses have preceded NH during modern
presidential elections for decades, but the AP reports that NH Secretary
of State Bill Gardener has broad authority of protect the state's early
status -- even if that means moving the primary to late fall 2007.
Expecting some turmoil, the DNC also voted to punish candidates who
campaign early in states that do not abide by the DNC calendar by
denying them delegates elected from those states. Governor John Lynch
(D-NH) announced over the weekend he already has letters from ten
potential candidates who pledged to campaign in the Granite State no
matter when the primary is held.

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE - Cohabiting is bad for women's health - but not
men's Women eat more unhealthy foods and tend to put on weight when they
move in with a male partner, according to a new report by the University
of Newcastle upon Tyne. On the other hand, a man's diet tends to become
healthier when he starts cohabiting with a female partner - and her
influence has a long-term positive impact. The reason for the change in
dietary habits, say experts, is that both partners try to please each
other during the 'honeymoon period' at the start of a cohabiting
relationship, by adjusting their routine to suit their partner and
eating food that he or she likes.
