Another Hard-Fought Victory

	This is my favorite type of email to send you - evidence that standing up for what we believe in has a real and powerful impact on our environment. We've proved it before with our work to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And now we've proved it again with a hard-fought courtroom victory that thwarts another key element in the Bush administration's efforts to undo 30 years of environmental progress. As you know, one of the Republicans most egregious anti-environment moves has been their attempt to open over 58 million acres of pristine national forest to more road development. I vowed to do everything in my power to stop this and introduced the Roadless Conservation Act to reject the Bush rule changes and make the essential Clinton era protections of these pristine areas the permanent law of the land. Over 60,000 of you joined this effort by becoming citizen co-sponsors - a massive show of support by any measure. While we were working in the Senate, others were working in the courts. Last week, we won: a decision was handed down and the Bush rewrite of the Roadless Rule has been thrown out. The Clinton era protections have been largely reinstated, our pristine forests will be protected, and we can chalk up another huge victory in the ongoing fight to protect our environment. Winning these battles is so much more difficult when we are in the minority and have to play defense. This is why it is so critical that we win back the Senate this year and start playing offense. Not only do we need to beat back their attempts to open every corner of America to development and resource extraction, we need to start passing new legislation that will protect our natural resources for generations to come.
