Beth Shulman | Labor Day Wake-Up Call

Beth Shulman says: "Just as unions turned dangerous and low-paid work like
steelcutting and auto assembly into good jobs during the 20th century, they can
create good jobs out of the 21st century's dangerous and low-paid work in the
service sector. Security guards are a good example. In Los Angeles, a group of
them earned $6.75 an hour before they were organized.... Now they earn $11.20 an
hour ..."
Nathan Newman | The Brilliance of Labor
http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/090506LB.shtml
Nathan Newman describes some important labor victories and how they were
achieved: "These strategies by labor don't often get a lot of play in the
mainstream media, but on this Labor Day, I thought it was a good time to
celebrate the sophistication and persistence of US workers and their labor
leaders in taking on the challenges of the new economy and actually winning
where many people had already written the labor movement's obituary."
