RELIGION & ITS ALTERNATIVES

PHILA INQUIRER - If you've got 30 seconds and an Internet connection,
you can become an ordained minister online. It doesn't even cost money.
For that reason, a county court judge in Pennsylvania ruled last year
that marriages performed by cyber-clergy aren't valid. Not so fast, says
the ACLU, which is now suing the state to validate these marriages. It's
not up to the state to say who can and can't perform marriages, they
say. That's a violation of the separation of church and state. Federal
courts have repeatedly ruled in favor of churches like the Universal
Life Church -- the church in question in the Pennsylvania case -- that
ordain people over the Internet. So it's probably a safe bet that these
marriages will be valid. Meanwhile, if you're looking for an officiant
for your wedding, let me know. My fees are very competitive.

CORPORADOS

GIZMODO - [Here] is a leaked official RIAA training video produced with
the National District Attorneys Association telling U.S. prosecutors why
they should bust music pirates: Because it'll lead them to "everything
from handguns to large quantities of cocaine [and] marijuana," not to
mention terrorists and murderers. The whole video is over 60 minutes
long - these are just two of the more outrageous minutes with Jim
Dedman, from the NDAA, interviewing Deborah Robinson and Frank Walters
from the RIAA about the benefits of going SWAT on music pirates. At one
point, Walters says the piracy/drug connection can be so bad that you
get asked "When you buy a CD, would you like it with or without-the with
is enclosing a piece of crack or whatever the case may be."

DCRTV - The FCC will learn on 2/29 whether the Supreme Court will take
the case in which the agency is attempting to restore its authority to
fine TV stations for the isolated, fleeting broadcast of the "F-word"
under federal indecency laws.

WAR DEPARTMENT

POGO - The Marine Corps "grossly mismanaged" requests from marines in
Iraq for highly survivable vehicles, leading to unacceptable delays in
procuring the vehicles which has cost the lives of hundreds U.S.
servicemen and women, Marine Corps science adviser Franz Gayl states in
a report made publicly available for the first time by the Project On
Government Oversight.

CHICAGO SUN TIMES - "Clout lists" that tracked politically backed job
seekers to Gov. Blagojevich's administration have surfaced in the case
of indicted businessman Tony Rezko, with Rezko's lawyers arguing the
documents shouldn't be allowed as evidence in his upcoming corruption
trial. The lists, which total 26 pages, offer yet another glimpse into
the administration's hiring practices shortly after the governor took
office in 2003. They include dozens of recommendations made by Rezko,
other Blagojevich fund-raisers, members of the General Assembly and
lobbyists for full-time jobs and seats on unpaid state boards and
commissions. . .

STAR LEDGER, NJ - As Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi tried to verify
returns in this month's historic presidential primary, she kept coming
up with errors for a handful of voting machines. The numbers from the
cartridges that print out vote tallies and the paper-tape backup within
the machine didn't match. Rajoppi asked her colleagues in other counties
to perform the same test, and similar problems were found in voting
machines for Bergen, Gloucester, Middlesex and Ocean counties. . . The
discrepancies have rekindled concerns over the reliability of the 10,000
Sequoia Voting Systems machines used in New Jersey. . . The problem is,
the tape and cartridge don't agree when the numbers are broken down by
party, Rajoppi said. The tape counts 168 votes for Democratic
candidates, while the cartridge shows 170. On the Republican side, the
tape counts 57 votes, but the cartridge shows 55. "Initially, when I
called Sequoia they said it was an anomaly. And I said, 'Excuse me. It's
not. It's an error,'" Rajoppi said.

WONKETTE - Months ago, John McCain applied for federal funds for his
primary campaign when nobody except the government would give him money.
Now he can raise more money on his own, but he might be legally bound to
run his campaign on his meager federal funds until the convention in
September, so take that Mr. Campaign Finance Reform.

JOEL CONNELLY, SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER - Out of the 2006 midterm
election, from the pen of Andrew Ferguson at Bloomberg News, came a
deliciously accurate, disturbingly close-to-home account of press
courtship. "I never saw Heifetz play the violin, or Hogan hit a
five-iron, or Pavlova do a pirouette," he wrote. "But I've seen John
McCain work a reporter. And I know I was seeing a master at the peak of
his form.". . .

HUFFINGTON POST - After yesterday's New York Times piece reporting
rumors of an alleged affair between John McCain and lobbyist Vicki
Iseman, her firm Alcalde & Fay, pulled her bio off their Web site. Of
course, the Web doesn't work quite that way, so you can check out a
cached version over at the Internet Archive.
Note to big corporations, firms etc. Removing things from the Web to
avoid bad PR typically results in worse PR.

GOVERNING - Mayor Sheila Dixon hosted a chat on washingtonpost.com. . .
Bethesda, Md.: You were reportedly the basis for the character Naresse
Campbell on HBO's "The Wire." Campbell plays a shrewd, calculating
politician intent on winning the mayoral seat. Have you seen the show
and, if so, what are your thoughts on the character you inspired?. . .
Mayor Sheila Dixon: First of all, I do watch and enjoy The Wire. The
fictional City Council President and I have very little in common. One:
I'm very focused on results. I'm much less concerned with political
ramifications. Two: I don't curse in meetings and while discussing
issues. However, we do have a similar fashion sense. And we are alike in
being no-nonsense elected officials.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN ADVERTISING PROJECT found that during her
campaign in the state Clinton ads never mentioned the word "change."
Obama ads mentioned change 1824 times.

NEWS AUSTRALIA - Darwin's former lord mayor has handed himself in at
court to begin serving a jail sentence for stealing a refrigerator,
women's underwear and a Darth Vader voice distorter. Peter Adamson, 47,
lost an appeal on February 15 after being found guilty of using stolen
council funds and gift vouchers to go on a "spending spree". He was
also found guilty of false accounting. . . One of the items, a
refrigerator, later turned up in an East Timorese thrift store while
police found women's underwear, hair dyes and the Star Wars voice
distorter at Adamson's home and council office.
