THE WAR DEPARTMENT

AP - The Pentagon said that it will shut down an anti-terror database
that has been criticized for improperly storing information on peace
activists and others whose actions posed no threat. It will be closed on
Sept. 17 and information collected subsequently on potential terror or
security threats to Defense Department facilities or personnel will be
sent by Pentagon officials to an FBI database known as Guardian,
according to Army Col. Gary Keck, a Pentagon spokesman. Keck said the
Pentagon database is being shut down because "the analytical value had
declined," but not because of public criticism of how it was used.
Eventually the Pentagon hopes to create a new system -- not necessarily
a database -- to "streamline such threat reporting," according to a
brief statement issued Tuesday. Keck said that after the TALON database
is shut down in September, a copy of the data it contains will be
maintained at the Pentagon for record-keeping purposes but not for
further analytical use.

OUTLYING PRECINCTS

CARL BERNSTEIN - [Hillary Clinton] failed the D.C. bar exam in 1973. She
never told anybody about it for the next 30 years. She finally put a
line about it in her so-called autobiography about three years ago. She
had been offered all these fancy jobs by Washington law firms after the
impeachment committee, but in fact she couldn't have gone to work there
except as a paralegal or a telephone operator, unless she took the bar
again. But she passed the Arkansas bar, which Bill had urged her to
take. So after Nixon resigned, she moved to Arkansas, took a job
teaching at the university law school, and worked in Bill's campaign.

DRUG BUSTS

DW, GERMANY - A patient suffering from multiple sclerosis has been
legally allowed to buy cannabis at the pharmacy under strict conditions.
It's the first time Germany has permitted the use of marijuana for
medicinal purposes. Germany' Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that the
German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices for the first
time approved the application of a 51-year-old woman suffering from
multiple sclerosis to legally buy cannabis from a pharmacy to ease her
symptoms. . . So far, cannabis has been illegal in Germany -- only
possession of small amounts of the drug are allowed -- and its use for
medicinal purposes limited to scientific studies and aims that "are in
the public interest.". . . In 2005, a court ruling threw into question
the complete ban on cannabis for medicinal purposes. The German Federal
Administrative Court ruled that the health of individual patients also
lay in "the public interest." That means that the Bonn-based Federal
Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices now has to consider each
application for use of cannabis for medicinal purposes on a case-by-case
basis.

MIDEAST

JEWISH TELEGRAPHIC AGENCY - In a dramatic reversal, the Anti-Defamation
League's national director issued a statement Tuesday using the term
"genocide" to describe the massacres perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire
against the Armenians.
The ADL and its national director, Abraham Foxman, have faced mounting
criticism in recent weeks for refusing to use the genocide label and
essentially opposing a proposed congressional resolution that would do
so. The controversy heated up last week when Foxman fired the director
of the ADL's New England region for denouncing the organization's
position in an interview with the Boston Globe. "In light of the heated
controversy that has surrounded the Turkish-Armenian issue in recent
weeks, and because of our concern for the unity of the Jewish community
at a time of increased threats against the Jewish people, ADL has
decided to revisit the tragedy that befell the Armenians," Foxman said
in his statement.

THE MIX

FIRE - After more than a year of public pressure from the Foundation for
Individual Rights in Education, Gettysburg College has amended its
controversial Sexual Misconduct Policy. Gettysburg students are finally
free from the draconian policy, which failed to distinguish between an
innocent, spontaneous hug and forcible rape. . . The original policy's
broad definition of sexual interaction included not only sex acts but
also "brushing, touching, grabbing, pinching, patting, hugging, and
kissing," drawing no distinction between innocent hugging and sex
crimes. . . The revised policy has eliminated the language equating rape
with mere hugging and instead prohibits "[s]exual misconduct, including
sexual assault, [which] is defined as deliberate physical contact of a
sexual nature without the other person's consent."

WOMEN'S E-NEWS - National Football League superstar Michael Vick is in
trouble, serious trouble. . . I just wish the NFL had the same outrage
toward spousal abuse and other forms of domestic violence. But they
don't. Not by a long shot.
Scores of NFL players as well as players from the National Basketball
Association and Major League Baseball have been convicted of domestic
abuse, yet they play on with no fear of losing their careers. Most pay
small fines, if that, and are back on the field immediately. The message
is clear. Beat a woman? Play on. Beat a dog? You're gone.

FURTHERMORE. . .

GUARDIAN - A quarter of babies born in the UK now have a foreign mother
or father. . . A spokesman said: "We have figures for the contribution
of mothers and fathers born abroad, and that has risen slightly, from
under 20% in 2001 to slightly over 25% now.

BBC - Tyrannosaurus rex would have been able to outrun a footballer,
according to computer models used to estimate running speeds of
dinosaurs. he work used data taken directly from dinosaur fossils,
rather than referring to previous work on modern animals. The University
of Manchester study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B,
shows T. rex had a top running speed of 18mph. The fastest dinosaur was
a small, bipedal and carnivorous species. This animal, called
Compsognathus, was about the size of a chicken, and could run at 40mph.
The only modern bird to equal this speed is the ostrich. By comparison,
an athlete in a 200m sprint can reach a top speed of 27mph.
