Tell Congress to renew the Voting Rights Act

When the Voting Rights Act was signed into law in 1965, it was a major step forward in ending America's long history of voter intimidation and disenfranchisement of minority groups.

Key provisions of the Voting Rights Act are set to expire next year. Legislation has been introduced to renew and strengthen the Act, and it enjoys widespread bipartisan support - including from the leadership of both parties - in both the House and Senate.

But despite this support, there are some Members of Congress who are determined to block renewal of the Act.

Common Cause is petitioning Congress to renew and strengthen the Voting Rights Act. Join our efforts by adding your name to the growing list of Americans who want to protect this important safeguard against disenfranchisement.

Sign the petition today: http://www.commoncause.org/VRApetition

While our country has come a long way in the last four decades, discriminatory voting practices are still widespread, and reared their ugly head in each of the last three elections.

Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. By signing this petition, you send Congress a message that voting rights are important to all Americans. We will deliver the petition after Congress returns from the July 4th recess, so add your name today and take a stand against voter discrimination.

Once you've signed, please pass the petition along to family and friends. The more names we deliver to Congress, the more they will know that the public won't allow them to play political games with the most important civil rights law in our nation's history.

Thank you for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Chellie Pingree
