If you haven’t been to the Union of Concerned Scientists website recently, now is the time to check it out—we’ve just completed a total redesign of the site! The new website makes it even easier to engage on the issues that matter most to you. Now you can easily find all of our information, from the most basic fact sheet on how wind energy works to in-depth analysis on the regional effects of global warming. Click here to visit the site now.
We’ve also transformed the UCS Action Center to make it easier for you to find opportunities to take action in your region as well as the most recent, urgent action alerts. In addition, be sure to check out the new “Making Progress” section to see updates about all you’ve helped us accomplish. Click here to visit the UCS Action Center.
The action center is just one part of the redesign, so be sure to explore the new site and all it has to offer. In the meantime, we wanted to send along an update about our work together over the past three months. This summer’s high gas prices and national focus on the presidential election have provided us with some great opportunities to highlight critical issues affecting our environment, health, and safety.
Global Security
A UCS advertising campaign urging Senators John McCain and Barack Obama to “get serious” about reducing the threat of nuclear weapons generated hundreds of media stories after it was pulled from the Minneapolis and Denver airports for being "too scary." In addition, thanks to some 25,000 letters sent to the U.S. Senate, and targeted grassroots lobbying by UCS supporters like you, Congress was put on notice that citizens vigorously oppose the weaponization of space. UCS also continued its long-standing effort to develop and strengthen the “technical” arms control and security field by hosting its 20th International Summer Symposium on Science and World Affairs in Boston this summer. Global Warming
This summer, thanks in part to calls and emails from UCS supporters like you, we saw tremendous momentum on the Lieberman-Warner-Boxer Climate Security Act of 2008. Although we didn’t reach the votes needed to advance the bill, it sets the stage for a new president and Congress to enact strong legislation that will more effectively build a clean energy economy and prevent the worst consequences of global warming. UCS is also working closely with officials and activists who are moving forward with ambitious state and regional plans to reduce the pollution that causes global warming. More...
Clean Vehicles
As the Bush administration and its allies pressed for more oil drilling as the “answer” to high gas prices, UCS and activists around the country pushed back—noting that better fuel economy dwarfs any eventual savings from more oil. The administration also continues to create controversy with its refusal to allow states to regulate global warming pollution from vehicles. Meanwhile, after finding notable flaws in ethanol advertising, we asked you to join our Smart Bioenergy Initiative in petitioning the Federal Trade Commission to address the issue. More...
Clean Energy
In the face of federal inaction, states are charting their own courses to a clean energy future. With your help, advocates, and legislators from Massachusetts, Michigan, California, and throughout the country are advancing energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy while blocking plans for more use of dirty coal, which would burden us with even more global warming pollution. Meanwhile, back in Washington, D.C., you have been keeping the pressure on Congress to support energy efficiency and renewable energy. More...
Scientific Integrity
This summer, you helped pass major legislation that allows federal government scientists to better protect the public from unsafe toys and other consumer products. Together, we’ve brought significant congressional and media attention to political interference in science at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and recognized EPA scientists for their hard work. We announced the Science Idol cartoon contest winner, and the 2009 cartoon calendar is up for sale. But our work to protect federal scientist whistleblower rights and to ensure sound science is used in efforts to protect the North Atlantic Right Whale continues. More...
Food and Agriculture
Your efforts helped pass two measures that will promote modern animal agricultural practices that do not rely on antibiotics in the feed and water of animals that are not sick. UCS continued to highlight the dangers of growing crops genetically engineered to produce pharmaceuticals and other chemicals outdoors in ordinary food crops and launched a web presentation highlighting sensible alternatives that have been effectively proven. In addition, UCS responded forcefully to a U.S. Department of Agriculture plan to stop collecting nationwide data on pesticide use. And we continued to highlight farmers and chefs working together to grow and cook food that is produced in ways that preserve our land, air, and water in our “Green Cuisine” web feature.
