OUTLYING PRECINCTS

MIKE KASZUBA, STAR TRIBUNE, MN - Freshman Congressman Keith Ellison was
among friends Sunday -- in this case, a gathering of atheists -- so his
support for a fistful of hot-button opinions, including the impeachment
of Vice President Dick Cheney, brought enthusiastic nods of approval and
standing ovations. As he was introduced to the eclectic gathering, which
included one man wearing a black T-shirt that read "Investigate 9/11,"
Ellison was told that after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Muslims had
joined atheists at the bottom of popular opinion polls. "You'll always
find this Muslim standing up for your right to be atheists all you
want," Ellison, the first Muslim to serve in Congress, said in a speech
to more than 100 atheists at the Southdale Library in Edina.

WONKETTE - Asked by an interviewer in 2000 whether she could forgive her
husband if she learned he'd had an extramarital affair, as Hillary
Clinton and Bob Livingston's wife had done, Wendy Vitter told the
Times-Picayune: "I'm a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary. If he
does something like that, I'm walking away with one thing, and it's not
alimony, trust me."

MATTHEW YGLESIAS - It's really too bad that when politicians get caught
doing stuff that shouldn't be illegal, they never, ever, ever seem to
respond by redoubling their efforts to reduce the criminalization of
victimless conduct. Does Vitter think Vitter should go to jail? Does he
think the hookers he had sex with should go to jail? If not, then
doesn't he think he should use his authority as one of the guys who gets
to write the laws to create a more just legal system?

INDICATORS

LA TIMES - Over the next half-century, California's population will
explode by nearly 75%. . . according to state Department of Finance
projections released Monday. California will near the 60-million mark in
2050, the study found, raising questions about how the state will look
and function and where all the people and their cars will go. . . But
whether sprawl or skyscrapers win the day, the Golden State will
probably be a far different and more complex place than it is today, as
people live longer and Latinos become the dominant ethnic group,
eclipsing all others combined.

FURTHERMORE. . .

ZOGBY - As San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds closes in on one of
the greatest career records in all of sport - playing the game known as
America's pastime - a majority of his countrymen simply don't care that
he is on the brink of making history, a Zogby Interactive poll shows.
Some of the indifference appears to stem from some disillusionment
Americans apparently feel toward athletes who now play the game, Zogby
polling indicates. Nearly half - 45% - said they believe Bonds either
broke the rules governing the use of steroids or that there is too much
evidence that he did so to believe his home run prowess was gained
legitimately. Just 15% said either that accusations are yet unproven
that Bonds has used steroids to help build the muscles that pounded so
many out of the park, or that they don't care if professional athletes
ingest such chemicals to make them stronger. And just 3% said they are
Bonds fans and want to see the record broken.

BBC - At 6ft 5ins on his hind legs, Samson must be the perfect guard
dog. But to his owners, Julie and Ray Woods, of Boston, Lincolnshire,
the three-year-old Great Dane-Newfoundland cross is simply a much-loved
pet. Samson - who weighs in at 19st 10lb (125kg) - is being billed as
"Britain's biggest dog" after scrap merchant staff who weighed him
contacted the media. But the placid dog has been unsettled by the
attention and has missed his quiet life, Mrs Woods said.

BBC - A teacher flew home to Wales from Toronto in Canada for a wedding,
only to discover he was one year early. . . It was only when he arrived
back at his mother's in Wenvoe near Cardiff he realized he had traveled
4,000 miles for a wedding 12 months away. . . Mr Barclay, who has been
teaching in Toronto for three years, admitted he had assumed the big day
was this July when he received his friend's e-mail. . . Once he realised
his mistake, Mr Barclay said a handful of other oddities began to make
sense, like the fact that his friend's mother never mentioned the
wedding when he called her. He said he had deleted the original e-mail
sent by his friend.
