BORDERS AND BARNES & NOBLE IN TROUBLE

REUTERS - Top U.S. booksellers Barnes & Noble Inc. and Borders Group
Inc. provided lackluster financial outlooks on Thursday, leading some
industry analysts to think that a merger or leveraged buyout could be in
the offing. . . Borders said it would close nearly half of its
Waldenbooks stores, weigh options for its international units and start
selling books through its own Web site -- ending its arrangement with
Amazon.com Inc. The company, which also posted a quarterly loss, said it
would focus on its U.S. superstores. Its shares fell 1 percent to $21.20
in Thursday midday trade. . .

Earlier this month, Barnes & Noble lowered its outlook, saying
higher-than-expected enrollment in its discount program had cut into
margins. It also attributed its lower earnings forecast to price-cutting
on the forthcoming Harry Potter book. . .

Borders said it would reduce the size of its struggling Waldenbooks
chain to about 300 stores by the end of 2008 from 564 in 2006. It is
also exploring alternatives for its UK, Ireland, Australia and New
Zealand superstores and Books etc. chain.
