The 109th Congress’ “lame duck” session has begun and high on the priority list for the rubberstamp Republican majority in its last days is to pass legislation that would codify the NSA’s illegal domestic spying program and immunize telecommunications companies that have participated in the program’s implementation. These measures would whitewash questionable actions by the administration and telecom companies and would thwart future investigations and litigation aimed at exposing (or ending) the program.

Urge your senators and your representative to JUST SAY NO!
• NO to codifying the NSA’s illegal warrantless wiretapping program, and
• NO to immunizing telecommunications companies or anyone else that aided in the
program’s implementation.

Sen. Patty Murray

Sen. Maria Cantwell
Phone: (202) 224-3441

Rep. Adam Smith
Phone: (202) 225-8901

Please let us know how your calls went with our online call report form.

Because of the nature of this lame duck session, a stand-alone bill that sanctions the NSA program’s violations of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and the Fourth Amendment may be unlikely to pass. However, Republicans may try to fold it into a larger appropriations or omnibus bill to sneak it through. They already tried and failed to sneak the telecom provision into the Port Security bill back in September, but with the clock running out on their majority, we should be ready for similar tricks.

Please call today and urge them to vote NO on
• ANY bill that would codify the NSA’s illegal wiretapping program, and
• ANY bill offering telecom immunity.

We can’t close the door on any investigation before it even starts. The civil liberties of all Americans are at stake. And we should not let the administration or telecommunications companies off the hook for violations of the Constitution and Americans’ privacy.

Thank you.
