Murtha Loses

The Democratic Party's secret ballot is complete and Steny Hoyer has defeated Jack Murtha 149 to 86 in the contest to replace Nancy Pelosi as House Majority Leader. As David Corn writes in Capital Games, there's no way to spin this: it was a big loss for Pelosi and for antiwar Democrats.

And read Corn's recent related post for background on the race between Murtha and Hoyer.

Meanwhile, the GOP is going back to the future by electing its former leader, Trent Lott, as its new party whip. What a sad statement Lott's return to the leadership makes, writes John Nichols in The Online Beat. "With all his history, it appears that the senator from Mississippi is still the best that Republicans seeking renewal of their party's fortunes can come up with."
