You made a difference by Exxposing Exxon!

Action Alert

Your letters are making an impact! Thanks to you and others like you, hundreds of thousands of letters have been sent to ExxonMobil’s CEOs in the last six months urging them to tell the truth about global warming and stop funding junk science groups that create a debate where there is none.

This month, in a report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, ExxonMobil openly admitted that global warming pollution has increased and that the burning of fossil fuels such as oil has contributed to the problem.

Admitting the problem is the first step toward the solution! This is a subtle but important change in the company’s public position. For years, ExxonMobil has stubbornly stuck to the position best explained by former CEO Lee Raymond in 2002:

“We in ExxonMobil do not believe that the science required to establish the linkage between fossil fuels and warming has been demonstrated.”

While the company is now acknowledging that burning fossil fuels for energy is contributing to global warming, it still questions to what extent.

Meanwhile, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (the world’s foremost authority on climate change) and climate scientists all over the world have made it abundantly clear that burning fossil fuels is a primary cause of global warming and that we need to substantially reduce our emissions to avoid global warming’s worst effects.

ExxonMobil still opposes action to fight global warming! Despite its slight policy shift, ExxonMobil is showing no sense of urgency to address the problem and is continuing to sit on its hands. The company recognizes the “risk of climate change” but, unlike other leading oil companies, it fails to set a single target toward reducing its greenhouse gas pollution. The biggest promise the company makes in its latest report, is to continue with business as usual — more research. As you know, ExxonMobil is big on research including the $15 million it spent to fund junk science that confuses the indisputable evidence on global warming.

So, a half cheer for ExxonMobil for taking its first baby step by acknowledging that burning oil and other fossil fuels threatens the planet.

And three cheers to you for joining the Exxpose Exxon campaign and helping to force the company to take this long overdue step.

Together, we will continue to push the world’s largest oil giant to:

  • Stop funding junk science on global warming and opposing mandatory caps on global warming pollution;
  • Help Americans save money at the gas pump and on their energy bills by investing in fuel efficiency and renewable energy;
  • Pledge not to drill in Alaska’s pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; and
  • Pay its court-ordered debts to communities devastated by the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

There’s more work to be done, but together we can move this mountain!

We thank YOU for continuing to make this campaign a success.

Please help us spread the word about this campaign and the outrageous acts of ExxonMobil by sending a free message to your friends and family urging them to join the campaign!

Sincerely,
Exxpose Exxon Coalition
