New Energy for America? States Lead, Not Bush

Campaign for America's Future | www.ourfuture.org

Dear T. Scott,

When President Bush talked about America's addiction to oil, he was talking about his own administration. Now he's peddling alternative energy, but his budget is sending billions in subsidies to big oil companies wallowing in record profits.

In stark contrast, states and localities across America are racking up successes that are breaking America's dependence on foreign oil and generating new jobs. You can help now to expand these successes in your state. Join us in showing all 50 American governors what proven new energy solutions they can adopt today, and urge your own governor to join the states leading the way to American energy independence.

A groundbreaking Apollo Alliance report, released this week, details solutions succeeding across the states to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil and create new American jobs. From clean power sources to efficient buildings to smart growth, Apollo's new report -- New Energy for the States -- highlights proven clean energy policies that we can expand nationally.

With the President and the Republican-controlled Congress in the pocket of big oil, the best way to advance America's move toward energy independence is to enlist more state leaders to build on and expand these state successes. You can help.

This weekend, the country's governors travel to Washington DC, for the National Governors Association meeting, where they will discuss priorities for the year ahead. Let's help to ensure that American energy independence is at the top of their agenda. Please let your governor know about proven clean energy solutions that can be adopted today, and urge your governor to take this message to the Washington gathering.

Here are a few examples that every Governor should know about and embrace:

  • In Pennsylvania, the Apollo Alliance helped enact energy standards that led to the opening of a wind power manufacturing plant in Johnstown, PA -- creating over 1,000 jobs for the state and spurring the development of 18 new Pennsylvania wind farms.
  • In Washington state, the Apollo Alliance helped to pass an energy efficiency bill that will save tax payers $489 million over fourteen years and conserve enough electricity to power over 90,000 homes.
  • In California, with the backing of the Apollo Alliance, the California Public Utilities Commission committed $3.2 billion for solar power over the next eleven years. The initiative will install 3,000 megawatts of solar power in the state -- which is the equivalent of one million roofs -- while generating thousands of construction jobs.

These successes can replicated across our nation. Apollo's report -- New Energy for the States -- chronicles scores of clean energy solutions like these that work. With your help, the solutions can become realities in your state.

Join the effort. Help put this report in front of America's governors to enlist them in the real work of breaking America's big oil addiction. Please, share our report to your governor today, and urge him or her to enact bold, proven reforms that will make America energy independent!
