I suspect that a lot of the implied support for the major-party candidates really comes from a distrust for their major-party opponent. Such a situation overvalues the real support a candidate enjoys in the hearts of Americans, whose votes may be counted as support for a candidate when the voter is merely opposing what they see as the greater evil.
