GREAT MOMENTS IN CRIME

AIKEN STANDARD, SC - A bank teller in Clearwater had a million reasons
not to open an account for an Augusta, Ga., man, authorities said.
Alexander D. Smith, 31, was charged with disorderly conduct and two
counts of forgery after he walked into the bank and tried to open an
account by depositing a fake $1 million bill, said Aiken County
Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Michael Frank. The employee refused to open the
account and called police while the man started to curse at bank
workers, Frank said. The second forgery charge came after investigators
learned Smith bought several cartons of cigarettes from a nearby grocery
store with a stolen check, Frank said. The federal government has never
printed a million-dollar bill, Frank said.

GREAT MOMENTS IN TOURIST PROMOTION

TRAVEL MOLE - "We don't have the destination presence we should have,
but we will. I like to cite Glasgow, Scotland as a classic example,"
Greg Ortale, recently named to head up the Greater Houston Convention
and Visitors Bureau, tells the Houston Business Journal.

He went on: "Glasgow was basically a dump where industrialization left
houses covered in soot. Nobody wanted to go there, but now it is one of
the top destinations in Europe. They made it happen simply by marketing
the destination for what it had, as well as making some key investments
and increasing the experience level. That is what Houston really has --
experience. We can give the visitor a variety of experiences that are
unequaled. "

He said he perceived Houston's strongest convention draw is its
"world-class cultural experience. It's become a cliche, but in the case
of Houston it is quite true. Also the retail opportunities that are
here, particularly for our hemispheric friends from the south." He
pointed out that Houston is a world capital with 88 consulates and a
diverse population.

IMMIGRATION STATS

INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE - Immigration over the past seven years was
the highest for any seven-year period in U.S. history, bringing 10.3
million new immigrants, more than half of them without legal status,
according to an analysis of census data released by the Center for
Immigration Studies in Washington. One in eight people living in the
United States is an immigrant, the survey found, for a total of 37.9
million people, the highest level since the 1920s. . .

A large proportion of recent immigrants, both legal and illegal, are
low-skilled workers and about one-third of those have not completed high
school, giving them significantly less education than Americans born in
the United States, according to the study, which is based on census data
as recent as March of this year. . .

About 30 percent of all immigrants and their children lack health
insurance, compared with 13 percent of native-born Americans. One of
every three uninsured people in the country is an immigrant or a young
U.S.-born child with at least one immigrant parent, he found. Immigrant
families account for almost three-quarters of the increase in the
uninsured in the past 15 years, he concludes.

Immigrants are employed at higher rates than Americans, according to the
survey. But because of their low educational levels, many work in
low-paying, entry-level jobs that do not provide health insurance or
other benefits. . .
