SUPPORT THE REAL SAM ADAMS - NOT THE BEER THAT RIPPED OFF HIS NAME 21
YEARS LATER
WALL STREET JOURNAL BLOG - Portland city commissioner Sam Adams decided
to run for mayor. Some local radio hosts registered Web addresses - and
promised to give them to Adams if he discussed his mayoral platform on
their show. He did.
The radio hosts then received [a] cease-and-desist letter from the
Boston Beer Co. last week. "Boston Beer has used the trademarks SAM
ADAMS and SAMUEL ADAMS since 1984," said the letter. The radio hosts -
who detail the "brew-ha-ha" here - have responded by broadcasting the
sound of a Sam Adams pint being poured into the toilet.
Helen Bornemann of Boston Beer's legal department said she didn't know
about the real Sam Adams running for mayor when she sent the letter. She
explained that the company once had a "Sam Adams for President"
marketing campaign feared someone was copying the advertisements. She
said she's willing to discuss the possibility of Adams using the Web
sites "probably for the length of the time the election is being held."
Meanwhile, Portland's Sam Adams has consulted with lawyers - after
all, his slogan "Sam Adams for Portland Mayor" is already on his Web
site . The mayoral candidate hinted at his legal defense: "They say
they've been using this trademark since 1984. I've been using it since
1963."

OREGON LIVE - Adams woke one morning last week to hear a national NPR
reporter telling his story. "It is very surreal," he says. But after
quickly coming to a head, this spat is going flat. . . The company has
since contacted the radio station and Sam Adams' office to let them know
the candidate is welcome to use the Web addresses.
Mark Mason and Dave Anderson have put the letter from Boston Beer up for
auction on EBay and have pledged the proceeds to the KEX Kids Fund,
which buys eyeglasses and hearing aids to needy children.
