SCIENTIFIC BLOGGING - A new study in the journal Atmospheric Environment
by researchers at USC and the California Air Resources Board found that
the average Los Angeles driver spends about six percent (1.5 hours) of
his or her day on the road, yet that period of time accounts for 33 to
45 percent of total exposure to diesel and ultrafine particles. On
freeways, diesel-fueled trucks are the source of the highest
concentrations of harmful pollutants. . . Results showed that the two
main sources of pollution were diesel-fueled trucks on freeways and hard
accelerations on surface streets. Surprisingly, overall congestion was
only a factor on arterial roads and, even then, the highest
concentrations of pollutants occurred only when vehicles were
accelerating from a stop. . .

in their struggle with Israel: a troupe of honey-voiced singers known as
Protectors of the Homeland. Wearing crisply pressed fatigues in urban
camouflage blue, the six band members gather each day to practice in an
old office within the Gaza City police headquarters. The small room
throbbed with energy as their dusty 12-track amplifier screeched with
feedback before being tamed by an engineer. To the accompaniment of a
backing track from a laptop computer, the men then started polishing
their routine of songs, almost all of which have strong Islamic and
militaristic content and titles like Change and Reform. Such uplifting
lyrics as "By the shrouds of the dead we are inspired" are typical.

and white supremacists are in support of Congressman Ron Paul's (R)
presidential candidacy. Stormfront -- the web's leading
Neo-Nazi/Skinhead website, run by white supremacist leader Don Black --
displays a "Ron Paul Revolution" banner ads on the footer of each page.
Also check out David Duke's WhiteCivilRights.com site, which prominently
publishes articles authored by Ron Paul on the homepage -- along with

serious problems Mitt Romney will face in the South over his religious
beliefs. Here is what Congressman Bob Inglis (R) advised Romney: "I told

Hillary Clinton because she hasn't indicated how she plans to deal with
the projected Social Security shortfall. It would have been helpful to
inform readers that the Congressional Budget Office projects that the
program will be fully solvent until 2046, almost 30 years after the
latest date that Clinton could leave the presidency. While Senator Obama
may feel a need to devise a financing schedule that can maintain full
funding for the second half of the 21st century, it is understandable
that Senator Clinton may view other matters, like fixing the health care
system, as being more pressing.

RADAR - John Edwards' people joined the big charade last week, accusing
maybe-real presidential candidate Stephen Colbert and his
Doritos-sponsored campaign of being "stained by corporate corruption and
nacho cheese," adding, "John Edwards has never taken a dime from taco
chip lobbyists, and America deserves a president who isn't in the pocket
of the snack food special interests." But as Radar has learned, the
Edwards campaign is not without its own dusting of Fiery Habanero:
According to campaign filings, the former senator accepted multiple
donations from a Frito-Lay executive. Edwards's buddy at Doritos is
Joyce Duesman of Texas, a former Frito bandito who is now a VP at
PepsiCo (Frito's parent company) specializing in industry relations. She
cut Edwards a check for $250 in March of this year, and followed it up
with a $500 donation in May. . .

and needs a serious overhaul, according to an intellectual property
lobby group that is pushing for a six-point policy change. Public
Knowledge released a reform proposal Friday, calling for fair use
reform, limits on secondary liability, protection from frivolous
takedown requests, new royalties for broadcasters, "orphan works"
reform, and clear notification from copyright holders regarding
limitations on fair use. The group wants to add incidental,
transformative, and noncommercial use of content to the legal test for
fair use and it is seeking a law to exempt search indexing from
infringement claims.
