YAAKOV KATZ, THE JERUSALEM POST - While chances for all-out war with
Syria in 2007 are deemed low by Israel's top intelligence officials,
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert instructed the defense establishment to
prepare for the possibility.

E-MEDIA TIDBITS - In Norway -- and probably elsewhere -- PDF editions of
newspapers aren't popular. New figures from Norwegian Media Businesses'
Association show that virtually nobody is interested in PDF version of
newspapers. PDF accounts for 0.07 percent of total newspaper circulation
in Norway, according to the trade magazine Kampanje . . . Combined,
Norwegian newspapers sold 1850 PDF copies daily last year.

REUTERS - A coalition of small farm groups urged Congress on Wednesday
to enact legislation this year that would tell consumers which country
produced the meat, fruit and other food they buy. Without mandatory
country of origin labeling, "consumers continue to be denied the ability
to differentiate between U.S. and imported food," the National Farmers
Union and a band of over 200 farm and rural groups said in a letter to
lawmakers. In 2002, Congress passed a law requiring mandatory country of
origin labels for beef, pork, lamb, produce, peanuts and seafood. But so
far, only labeling for fish has taken effect. Other foods are scheduled
to follow suit in September 2008.

YOAV STERN, HAARETZ - A proposed constitution written by the Israeli
Arab advocacy center, Adalah, states that Arab Knesset members will be
able to bring about the disqualification of bills that impinge on the
rights of Arabs, and classifies the State of Israel as a "bilingual and
multicultural" country rather than a Jewish state. The proposal,
entitled "The Democratic Constitution," also calls for majority and
minority groups to split control of the government in such a way that
will strengthen the Arab minority on issues relating to the character of
the state. Adalah's version of the constitution essentially abolishes
the Jewish elements of Israel, but allows the Jewish majority to
maintain its character through educational and cultural institutions.
The proposal invalidates the Law of Return, which grants automatic
citizenship to people with at least one Jewish grandparent, and states
that citizenship will be granted to those who come to Israel for
humanitarian reasons, regardless of their religion.

researchers who conducted an unusual study of squirrel monkeys. . . "We
were able to measure the motivation to take nicotine ... This revealed a
high motivation to take nicotine, with monkeys pressing up to 600 times
to get a single injection of nicotine."

THE AUSTRALIAN - When investigators raided the home of former Australian
Museum pest controller Hendrikus van Leeuwen, every room except his
bathroom and the kitchen was filled with stuffed animals and skeletons.
Among the items found on his western Sydney property were the skulls of
a Javan rhino and a thylacine, the skin and teeth of a clouded leopard
and the skeleton of an Adelie penguin collected during the 1912 Mawson
expedition to Antarctica. The keen taxidermist, skull molder and
collector stole an incredible array of animal and bird specimens from
Australia's oldest museum between 1996 and 2003. In the NSW District
Court yesterday, van Leeuwen confirmed his guilty plea to 15 charges of
stealing as a servant and accepted that a further 179 stealing offences
should be taken into account when he was sentenced.
