What a year! As the Holiday Season kicks into high gear, I find myself reflecting on all the great victories we won this year for our wolves, polar bears and other imperiled wildlife… and the huge role supporters like you played in winning them.

While it’s true that our wildlife and wild lands face daunting challenges in the year ahead, let’s take a moment to remember all we’ve accomplished together in 2006.

As a small token of our thanks for your important work to protect imperiled wildlife, we’ve created some festive Holiday eCards for you to share with friends, family and loved ones.

Thanks to the support of dedicated folks just like you, this year we were able to…

  • Protect Polar Bears and Other Wildlife in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Big Oil lobbied hard to industrialize this pristine natural treasure, but together we fought back with tens of thousands of calls and messages to Congress and kept their drills out of the most important onshore denning habitat for America’s vanishing polar bears.
  • Safeguard Protections for Wolves and Other Endangered Species. With your help, we stopped Representative Richard Pombo’s Wildlife Extinction Bill and maintained the Endangered Species Act’s essential protections for our wolves, jaguars and other wildlife. Pombo won’t be returning to Congress next year… and neither will his terrible bill.
  • Get Rid of a Deadly Pesticide That Has Killed Millions of Birds. Thanks in part to the efforts of more than 20,000 Defenders supporters, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a proposal to ban most uses of the deadly pesticide carbofuran -- a substance that has been responsible for millions of bird fatalities and has poisoned farm workers worldwide.
  • Give Voice to Thousands of Alaskans Working to End Aerial Gunning of Their State’s Wolves. In October, local conservationists delivered nearly 57,000 signatures to secure a place on a state ballot for a ban on allowing gunners in low-flying aircraft to target wolves in Alaska. This monumental accomplishment would not have been possible without the generous support of wildlife enthusiasts like you.

And that’s not all. Your efforts helped us secure a plan to restore river otters to New Mexico and block proposals in several states that would have forced local communities to pay greedy developers whose projects violated local conservation efforts.

For all this and more… Thank you.

We have plenty more to do in the year ahead. But for the moment, please enjoy your free Wildlife Holiday eCards and accept our sincere gratitude for all your support. They’re just our small way of thanking you for a very BIG year.

Sincerely,
