Native American Legislation Update: December 20, 2006
Good news during holiday season.
At a time when traditions are important to all of us, we are excited to share with you the good news that traditional native languages have received a funding boost. The Esther Martinez Native American Languages Preservation Act of 2006 was signed into law by President Bush this December. It encourages fluency in indigenous languages through parent and teacher training and language immersion programs. It will link children and elders.
Many of you sent letters, emails, and faxes or called your members of Congress during the past two months when the bill was held up in the Senate. You contributed to a heartening legislative success.
We at FCNL wish you very happy holidays. You can celebrate with the knowledge that now important spiritual ceremonies can continue to be performed in ancestral languages. Retaining an original language retains a unique perspective or world view and intrinsic values for tribes.
Thank you for your caring and support throughout 2006.
