| With more than 70,000 National Guard troops deployed to Iraq, our homefront has been left vulnerable in the face of natural disasters and state emergencies. In a step that Washington will be likely to follow, California Gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides is calling on President Bush to bring California's National Guard home. National Guard forces have fallen 20 percent below their authorized strength, as fewer members re-enlist and fewer men and women sign up. And it's about to get worse. President Bush has stretched our forces so thin, there aren't enough combat-ready units to sustain operations in Iraq. New reports indicate that Pentagon officials are looking to fill the gap by calling even more heavily on the Guard, further degrading its ability to meet our security needs here at home. Think about this for a moment: this fool's errand overseas isn't just breeding more terror and torture in Iraq, it's also hurting us here at home.
