Amazing Response to Earth: The Sequel‏

From Environmental Defense Fund

"It was a terrific show. There are some truly brilliant people out there and each of them really gives you hope for the future. One repeated theme 'Cap and Trade' and how it will really jump start the initiatives for alternative sources of energy. I hope President Obama was watching!"

Dear T. Scott,

Help us spread the hopeful message about our green energy future.

Please email your members of Congress and governor today.

First of all, I apologize for reaching out to you again this week. We normally try to keep our email messaging to no more than 2 or at most 3 emails per week.

But the overwhelmingly positive response we received from the recent premiere of the Discovery show Earth: The Sequel inspired me to share some of these comments with you and to expand on our plans for using the show to spread our message.

For those of you who missed it—or who want to encourage others to watch—Discovery will rebroadcast it on Sunday, March 15th at 11am EDT. Please commit to watching the show and invite your friends to watch.

You can also send an email now to your members of Congress and your governor to help us spread the hopeful message that these green energy technologies are real, they're happening and we need to cap carbon to accelerate our transition to our green energy future.

Speaking of hopeful messages, here is a small sample of the more than 250 comments we received to our Green Room post:

Janalea Hoffman wrote, "I thought this was very hopeful. We need more programs reporting like this in the mainstream news, so more people know of these hopeful things that are happening! Thanks for letting me know!"

liberalNmoderation wrote, "I watched it, and was really stoked about all the smart folks who are highly motivated, highly funded, and really trying to save the world. Made me feel optimistic about the future for the first time in a long time."

Marco Bell wrote, "What a bright ray of HOPE! (no pun intended) I'm so much more energized knowing that these brilliant, ecological individuals (and even Capitalists) are engaged FOR a more sustainable future. YES, we need 'Cap & Trade' policies worldwide."

Michael Reynolds wrote, "It was incredible, educational and inspiring. It should be required viewing for EVERY member of Congress and every American."

And there were scores more just like these. How refreshing to read them—and please keep the comments coming.

To answer some of your questions and suggestions, here are our plans for leveraging this inspirational show:

  • Sharing with Members of Congress. In addition to asking you to email Congress, we are exploring several opportunities to present this show to Members and staffers – from hand-delivering copies to the Hill to hosting special screenings.
  • Encourage Students to Watch. With the help of Discovery, we hope to promote this video to schools and teachers nationwide.
  • Increase Viewership. We will be "serializing" this show and distributing these on the Web. We hope to build an ever-increasing audience for this message and encourage others to join the fight. In addition to Sunday's encore performance, future airings of Earth: The Sequel are in the works and there will be a DVD available through discovery.com in the coming weeks. We will keep you updated.

Now that you have seen the future that capping carbon can unleash, please tell congress to pass cap and trade legislation this year.

Thank you for all that you do,
Sam Parry
