The United States and the rest of the world dodged a major bullet with John McCain's lost presidential bid. But what have we gained instead? As the euphoria of Barack Obama's historic victory wears off, there is no time to waste in asking critical questions about his plans for Iraq, Afghanistan, and the so-called "war on terror."

Fortunately, some people are already doing this. This week on Democracy Now!, Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez brought in voices from across the globe to probe the question of what Obama's foreign policy goals will be, reminding us that, at the same time that so much of the country was jubilantly celebrating his big win, in Afghanistan, more families were mourning the loss of loved ones hit by U.S. airstrikes. Now, rumor has it Secretary of Defense Robert Gates may have a role in an Obama administration.

As Obama prepares to become commander-in-chief, be sure to visit AlterNet's War on Iraq section, where we will continue to keep a close watch on Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond.
