It's a new year, and a great time to renew commitments to a healthy lifestyle, reconnect with old friends, and pledge to make the world a better place. We have ways for you to do all of these things today, with mouth-watering green recipes, fun e-cards that support animal welfare organizations, and easy ways to make a difference. Read on, and thanks for caring!

1. Spread the News Via Care2's News Network
The mainstream media could learn a thing or two from citizens like Care2 member Dave C.

In late December, while most people were making their New Year's resolutions and enjoying vacations, Dave C was scouring press releases on the White House website and came across a particularly disturbing "signing statement" by President Bush on the recently passed postal reform bill.

He learned that the president now was asserting the right to search through citizens' private mail without a warrant. He decided to spread the news via Care2's social network, and it was Dave C, not the New York Times or Fox News, who broke the national story, right on the Care2 News Network!

What is the Care2 News Network? It's the news you care about - you find the news, submit it, and vote on what's newsworthy. It's community news for people who care about making a difference. See what's on the front page today: http://go.care2.com/e/R4K0/dD5B/JXLF

2. Tell New Congress: Protect Every Child's Right to Survival
The new 110th Congress has set some lofty goals for its early days, but what has been missing from the discussion is fulfilling a promise made by the last Congress to the world's children. Take action today.

According to UNICEF, 29,000 children die every day from preventable causes, like malaria, measles and diarrhea. It's an outrage, and it doesn't have to be that way. Simple, low-cost steps - like clean water to prevent diarrhea, immunizations to prevent measles and tetanus, antibiotics to treat pneumonia, and bed nets to prevent malaria - could save the lives of millions of children in the developing world.

Here's what's happening: the countries of the world, including the United States, have all committed to work together to reduce the death rate for children under five by two-thirds by 2015. Sadly, the world is not on track to meet these goals, and we need Congress to act.

Children have the right to live, and there are few issues in the world that are as important and as solvable as saving the world's children. Please urge the new Congress to stand up for children around the world: http://go.care2.com/e/R4ld/dD5B/JXLF
3. E-Card Spotlight: Send Warm Fuzzies and Save Animals!
What better way to connect with your friends than to send them an e-card through Care2 that supports the ASPCA and its critical work to save animals?

Founded in 1866 as the first animal welfare organization in the Western Hemisphere, the ASPCA continues to pursue its mission to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals.

You can help spread the word about the ASPCA's good work and support their efforts to end animal cruelty by sending a fun, free e-card today!

4. Share a Story About Your Rescued Pet!
Did your pet come from an animal shelter? We want to hear your "tail"! Tell us about your pet and include their photo. How has your pet enriched your life? How did rescuing a pet from a shelter make you feel?

Every day thousands of loving and adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized in animal shelters because there are simply not enough homes for them all. But if we can spread the word with your story about the importance of adopting pets from shelters rather than pet stores, we can encourage others to help rescue loving animals in need of a home.

Read the heartwarming stories of fellow Care2 members who have rescued pets, and tell your story here: http://go.care2.com/e/R4le/dD5B/JXLF
5. Learn About the Power of Animals' Friendship
Here are two stories--one from Al Pacino--about surprising experiences that show how powerful and profound animals can be in our lives. The things that nourish us, give us joy, and help us to live in our hearts take many forms.
