Now Tell Congress: Hands Off The Internet

Welcome to the activists from petitionsite.com who signed onto our "Hands Off the Internet" campaign. As we said in our first email to you, this fight is heating up in Congress and we need your help.

Congress is considering a dangerous telecom reform bill that puts the free and open nature of the Internet at risk. The COPE Act (absurdly named "Communications Opportunity, Promotion and Enhancement") would allow big media companies to privatize our Internet. Help us stop this flawed bill!

This bill is moving fast, so Congress needs to hear from you today. If the COPE Act becomes law, telecom companies could create "lanes" on the Information Superhighway where their own content and services are delivered in the fast lane, and the rest of us are stuck in the slow lane. That could spell the end to innovation that has brought us Google, MySpace, eBay, Amazon and so many other sites and web-based services.

So far the major battles over the COPE bill have been fought between the cable industry and the telephone industry. The public hasn't had a seat at the table. It's time Congress heard from you.

Thank you for all you do for Common Cause.

Sincerely,

P.S. Common Cause is working hard to defeat the COPE bill. We recently released a ground-breaking research report exposing nine telecom industry front groups, and we're currently analyzing industry campaign contributions and lobbyist spending.
