The Indianapolis Star published a letter from one of its readers in which the reader laments what she sees as the media’s getting in the way of George W. Bush’s potential to reach his true legacy of greatness.
According to the reader, “the media have forgotten who our president is until they are ready to bash him.”
She reminds us that, “Ever since the attack on Sept. 11, 2001, our country has been safe.”
She goes on to defend this misunderstood president: “We cannot blame our current president for the financial mess. Congress decided it was OK to eliminate regulations on banking to further the sale of homes to those who could not afford them.”
Oh, where to start?
I will get the most controversial out of the way first. Like it or not, there has been legitimate research done by learned men and women into what happened on September 11, 2001. The mainstream media, which is the media I believe the writer is referring to, has let the commentary of “normal” Americans set the tone for how to react to the research. They, like “normal” Americans, have condescendingly marginalized this research and the people who’ve been involved in conducting it.
There’s enough information that at least points to conditions, situations and interactions around what happened on 9/11 to keep all levels of the news media busy until a real, nonpartisan investigation by serious people with full subpoena power can be conducted and completed. Too many serious questions have been asked about what happened on that day and too many missteps have been made in the investigation of that horrific tragedy.
The mainstream media has taken it upon itself to shield members of The Regime from facing criminal charges even though those charges may lead to proving that The Regime is guilty of killing 2,800 or so Americans in order to advance its military and hegemonic agenda.
Of course, such a transparent, open, fair and honest investigation may serve to exonerate all, most, many, some or even a few members of The Regime. The media ran, and still runs interference for The Regime in what could be the greatest crime ever committed by the American government against American citizens. As serious as that might be, the media has served to disparage, degrade and deride anyone who suggests such a possibility or even another investigation.
Then there’s the matter of Downing Street’s Excellent Adventure, otherwise known as The Downing Street Memo. The memo made it very clear that The Regime had made up its mind to invade Iraq long before it actually invaded.
The thing is, even as The Downing Street Memo or, ultimately, The Downing Street memos were being compiled, The Regime’s Front Man was telling the American people as well as the American Congress that it would use military action only as a last resort in dealing with Iraq.
Although the so called “liberal” mainstream media reported on The Downing Street memos when they were discovered in 2005, the reports quickly faded away.
Unlike the way it handled the discovery that the Nixon Administration had orchestrated a break-in of The Democratic Party headquarters located in The Watergate Hotel in the ‘70s or the way it handled the discovery that Bill Clinton had an affair in the ‘90s, the so called “liberal” mainstream media handled the discovery that The Front Man lied about The Regime’s plans to go to war with Iraq as if it was incidental to all of the other “important” news of 2005. It was almost handled as an “FYI” for the American people. And the American people accepted the news that way.
The assertion that the fact that The US has been “safe” since September 11, 2001 is due to The Regime’s invasion of Iraq is ridiculous on its face. This would mean that we should look at every administration which took place during a period in which The US was not attacked on its own soil as a great administration. Consequently, carried to its logical conclusion, almost all of the administrations of almost all of the presidents of The United States were, in fact, great administrations.
Additionally, it must not be forgotten that, before the sentence, ““Ever since the attack on Sept. 11, 2001, our country has been safe” could ever have been uttered, the sentence “The awful events which occurred on September 11, 2001 occurred during The Regime’s rule or on The Bush Administration’s watch” must be uttered.
