MANY DEMOCRATS AREN'T DEMOCRATS ANYMORE
ONE OF the problems that Democrats face is that not only are few of
their leaders not Democrats anymore, but neither are many ordinary
members.
For example, of the three major Democratic candidates in this year's
election, Edwards, whatever his personal flaws, best fits the pattern of
a Democrat in the New Deal, Fair Deal, Great Society tradition. Basic to
this is a concern for economic decency in the system, a strong focus of
the Edwards campaign.
But a new Harris poll shows that many Democrats are someplace else:
"Among members of his own party, half (51%) say they will vote for
Edwards, but one-quarter of Democrats will not (23%) and 24 percent are
not sure."
