ETHANOL DRIVING UP COST OF MILK, PIZZAS

ABC NEWS - Dairy products have become more expensive, causing prices to
rise for some of America's favorite foods, from ice cream to chocolate
to pizza. Over the past two months the average price for a gallon of
whole milk is $3.26, up 19 cents. And that's causing an economic chain
reaction.

Among those hit the hardest are people like John Esposito, who owns
Sal's Pizza in New York. A slice used to be $2.15, but he's ready to
raise the price to $2.30. Esposito anticipates he'll be charging $2.40 a
slice soon.

Dairy prices are rising because the price of corn is going up, thanks to
greater demand for the corn-based fuel ethanol. Some experts predict
milk prices could rise to $4 a gallon by year's end. "It may well be
that what we're learning is the widespread use of corn for ethanol may
not be in the best public interest," Tom Spreen, an economics professor
at the University of Florida told ABC News.

There's no sign of relief on the horizon, either. Corn prices are
expected to rise another 50 percent by year's end.

FRUITS FOR FUEL? SAID TO CONTAIN FAR MORE ENERGY THAN ETHANOL

MATT MCGRATH, BBC - The sugar found in fruit such as apples and oranges
can be converted into a new type of low carbon fuel for cars, US
scientists have said. The fuel, made from fructose, contains far more
energy than ethanol, the scientists write in the journal Nature.
Separately, a British report on biofuels says all types of waste
products, including plastic bags, can be used to make biodiesel fuel. .
. Critics say that the current biofuels, both diesel made from palm oil
and ethanol made from corn, encourage farmers to switch land to fuel
production, driving up the price of food in the process. . . The
scientists say that fructose can be obtained directly from fruits and
plants or made from glucose.

WHAT TO DO WITH THOSE SHOPPING BAGS
TREE HUGGER - What to do with all those plastic bags that seem to be
just hanging around everywhere? One idea that seems to be a hit amongst
the DIY and creative arty crowd is to fuse various plastic bags together
and make fabric out of them. The basic process is to iron the plastic
bags, with a sheet of baking paper between iron and plastic, until two
or more sheets fuse together. Sound easy - well in theory it is, but it
takes a little practice to get the timing and heat just right. Once you
have it down, you can start experimenting with colors and patterns,
using the plastic bag labels as decoration. And then you cut, sew, glue
or whatever the plastic fabric together to make all manner of things.
