THE MIX

RICHARD PRINCE, JOURNAL-ISMS - The average local radio market has 16
white male-owned radio stations - but just one female-owned station and
two-minority owned stations, according to "Off the Dial: How Media
Consolidation Diminishes Diversity on the Radio," a report issued by
Free Press, a media advocacy group.
"Women own just 6 percent of all full-power radio stations, even though
they comprise 51 percent of the population. People of color own just 7.7
percent of stations but make up 33 percent of the population," the
report said. . . "Latinos own less than 3 percent of U.S. radio stations
but make up 15 percent of the population," said Brent Wilkes, national
executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

AP - The NAACP said it is cutting about 40% of its national staff and
closing, at least temporarily, its seven regional offices to cover three
years of budget shortfalls. The civil rights group will reduce its staff
from 119 to 70 through layoffs and attrition to avoid draining more of
its shrinking reserves, interim president and chief executive officer
Dennis Hayes said. The Baltimore headquarters will remain open and still
offer services provided by the regional offices, he said. . . The NAACP
has used about $10 million in reserve funds to cover shortfalls over the
past three years, Hayes said. He declined to say how much is left in the
fund.

MERCENARIES

ALTERNET - The families of four American security contractors who were
burned, beaten, dragged through the streets of Fallujah and their
decapitated bodies hung from a bridge over the Euphrates River on March
31, 2004, are reaching out to the American public to help protect
themselves against the very company their loved ones were serving when
killed, Blackwater Security Consulting. After Blackwater lost a series
of appeals all the away to the U.S. Supreme Court, Blackwater has now
changed its tactics and is suing the dead men's estates for $10 million
to silence the families and keep them out of court.

FURTHERMORE. . . .

REUTERS - Dutch students have developed powdered alcohol which they say
can be sold legally to minors. The latest innovation in inebriation,
called Booz2go, is available in 20-gram packets that cost $1.35-$2. Top
it up with water and you have a bubbly, lime-colored and -flavored drink
with just 3 percent alcohol content. "We are aiming for the youth
market. They are really more into it because you can compare it with
Bacardi-mixed drinks," 20-year-old Harm van Elderen told Reuters. . .
The legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking is 16 in the Netherlands.
