(1) Energy: Sierra Club, Utility Strike Landmark Deal
In a landmark deal with the Sierra Club, Kansas City Power and Light (KCPL) has agreed to build only one new coal-fired power plant, instead of the five originally planned for Missouri-and for the first time ever, the carbon emissions from the one remaining plant will be completely offset through efficiency and wind power. Other hazardous air pollutants will also be greatly reduced, including a 90% reduction in harmful mercury emissions. The deal is only the beginning of KCPL's efforts, which is now seeking a 20% reduction in carbon emissions system-wide by 2020. Find out more about this historic deal.
(2) New Hampshire: The People Have Spoken
Over 140 New Hampshire towns passed global warming resolutions last week, sending a clear message to Congress and the White House that immediate action is needed to curb global warming pollution. The votes came as a result of a grassroots coalition effort, with Sierra Club volunteers gathering petition signatures and talking to people in their communities about the importance of taking action to fight global warming at the local, state and federal level. (3) Alaska: Clean Water Victory
In a victory for clean water in Alaska, and the rest of the nation, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals announced that it intends to side with Sierra Club and other plaintiffs, ruling that Couer Alaska violated the Clean Water Act with plans to dump mining waste into Lower Slate Lake. If it had been allowed to proceed as planned, the Kensington Mine would have been the first mine in a generation to dispose of its chemically-treated mine tailings in a lake or stream. Read More.

The Senate will soon vote on an amendment to the Budget Bill, offered by Sen. Bingaman (D-NM) which would prohibit the scoring money from the sale or lease of federal lands in the name of deficit reduction. This change could put a stop to tricks like we've seen from the Bush administration to count money anticipated from drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in his budget, or Rep. (5) Take Action: Restore Clean Water Protections!
The Clean Water Act is essential to protecting our nation's lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands from unregulated pollution and destruction. However, Supreme Court decisions and vague guidance from Federal Agencies have left in question what is protected under the act. The Clean Water Authority Restoration Act of 2007 is needed to restore the longstanding protections originally intended by Congress.
