Happy D.A.R.E. Day!!!

Dear Friend,

Yesterday, while at work, I received an unexpected visit from a young woman.

HER: "Hi, I'm fundraising for D.A.R.E. [Drug Abuse Resistance Education]. They lost a lot of their federal funding and we're trying to help them keep helping kids. Are you familiar with D.A.R.E.?"
ME: "Yes, I went through the D.A.R.E. program when I was young."
HER: "Well, how did it work for you?"
ME: "Well, there have been numerous studies done on DARE and they all show that it is ineffective, and can actually cause more drug abuse among young people."
HER: "You see, it has only been around for 20 years or so. So, its kinda hard to get all the data in that short of an amount of time. But maybe that's why it lost its funding."
ME: "Yes, I'd imagine so."
HER: "So, would you be willing to sponsor the D.A.R.E. calendar?"
ME: "Goodbye."

It's funny to listen to how inarticulate D.A.R.E. advocates are when it comes to defending the inherently flawed program in which they believe. What's not so funny is that George W. Bush has declared today National D.A.R.E. Day to celebrate 25 years of a program found to be absolutely ineffective by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the Surgeon General, The National Academy of Sciences and the Department of Education.

This week, advocates for this ineffective program will be raising heaps of money to continue brainwashing children with dishonest information about drugs. Today, on National D.A.R.E. Day, will you help Students for Sensible Drug Policy compete with D.A.R.E.'s head-in-the-sand ideology by making a contribution? All donations made this week will go toward sending an SSDP representative to the 2008 D.A.R.E. International Training Conference this August in San Antonio, Texas.

With a donation of $40 or more, you'll get your very own t-shirt, showing that you stand with SSDP in daring to resist the War on Drugs.

Students for Sensible Drug Policy represents the "DARE Generation" - youth who grew up surrounded by scare tactics and lies about drugs and drug policy, but who know that the War on Drugs is failing our generation and our society. We know that doctors, substance abuse counselors and scientists are best suited to talk to children about drugs, rather than people with guns and handcuffs on their hips. This is the very message we will bring to D.A.R.E.'s doorstep this August with your assistance.

Please donate any amount that you can, and help us Just Say Know to dishonest and counterproductive "drug education."

Thanks so much,

P.S. When he was a student member of our URI chapter, SSDP Field Director Micah Daigle represented the drug policy reform movement at the 2004 D.A.R.E. conference. You can read more about his experience and read the letter he distributed to 600+ police officers here: http://ssdp.org/wiki/index.php/2004_D.A.R.E._International_Training_Conference
