ORGANIC CONSUMER - A federal court has ruled, for the first time ever,
that the US Department of Agriculture failed to abide by federal
environmental laws when it approved a genetically engineered crop
without conducting a full Environment Impact Statement. In what will
likely be a precedent-setting ruling, US District Court Judge Charles R.
Breyer of the Northern District of California decided in favor of
farmers, consumers, and environmentalists who filed a suit calling the
USDA's approval of genetically engineered alfalfa a threat to farmers'
livelihoods and a risk to the environment. Judge Breyer ordered that a
full Environmental Impact Statement must be carried out on "Roundup
Ready" alfalfa, the GM variety developed by Monsanto and Forage
Genetics. The decision may prevent this season's sales and planting of
Monsanto's GM alfalfa and future submissions of other GE crops for
commercial deregulation.

ABC NEWS - ABC News has learned that the campaign of Sen. Hillary
Clinton, D-N.Y., has registered the names of two Web sites with the
express goal of attacking her chief rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.
It's the first time this election cycle a presidential campaign has
launched a Web site with the express purpose of criticizing a rival.
Votingpresent.com and Votingpresent.org are domains hosted by the same
IP address as official Clinton Web sites, such TheHillaryIKnow.com,
which was launched with much fanfare this week. The Clinton campaign
intends to use these new Web sites to paint Obama as cowardly. Clinton
has attacked Obama for having occasionally voted "present" as an
Illinois state legislator when it came to contentious legislation.

FURTHERMORE . . .

TELEGRAPH, UK - [British] motorists caught using a hand-held mobile
phone while driving could be jailed for two years under tough new
guidelines issued by prosecutors. Drivers who adjust sat-navs, tinker
with MP3 music players such as iPods or send text messages at the wheel
could also face prison sentences.
Prosecutions will be brought if by using the equipment a motorist is
judged to have posed a danger to other drivers, such as causing another
car to swerve. Using a hand-held mobile while driving was outlawed in
2003, but it is estimated that half a million motorists flout the ban
each day.

AP - A woman who claims she was raped by a fellow employee while working

LA TIMES - California's population continued to grow modestly in the
last fiscal year despite a significant exodus of residents to other
states, according to a state report released Wednesday. The annual study
by the Department of Finance showed that 89,000 more people moved out of
California than moved here from elsewhere in the United States.
California's population did grow in fiscal 2007 -- but the growth rested
on births and the arrival of more than 200,000 immigrants from other
countries.
