ECO-CLIPS

DENVER POST - Colorado Division of Wildlife officials announced this
afternoon that they have as many volunteers as they need for the
emergency feeding of the endangered Gunnison Basin mule-deer herd. As of
2 p.m, 250 people had volunteered to help Colorado Division of Wildlife
officers feed the herd of 21,000 that has been hard hit by snow up to 4
feet deep and temperatures that have plunged to minus 35 degrees.

DAILY GREEN - Not many people give thought to menhaden, the little oily
Atlantic fish that spawns in coastal estuaries. But a lot depends on the
great schools of menhaden – the livelihood of commercial fishermen and
the sport of recreational anglers, as two examples, since some of their
favorite fish, like striped bas, feed on menhaden. But most people come
into contact with menhaden in the aisle of health supplements. There, it
is packaged in the form of Omega Protein pills, the tablets full of
Omega-3 fatty acids, a fact that Mother Jones exposed in a 2006
investigation. (The oil also ends up in a variety of surprising consumer
products, from cosmetics to linoleum.) Now, states on the Chesapeake Bay
are fighting over what to do about menhaden, given that their numbers
have dropped so low that striped bass may not be eating enough to
maintain strength against disease, according to an Op-Ed in the
Virginian-Pilot.

NY TIMES - The Bush administration jumped into a long-running legal fray
in California, exempting the Navy from a law that environmental groups
have used to prevent the use of a type of powerful sonar that is
believed to harm whales. 0117 02 The waiver exempts the Navy from the
Coastal Zone Management Act, which allows states a voice in federal
activities along their shores

OUTLYING PRECINCTS

NY MAGAZINE - When we asked whether he had talked to HRC since the book
came out, [Carl Bernstein] said he ran into her at a dinner in Iowa that
she, Obama, and Biden were speaking at. "She said, 'Oh, Carl!' and put
her arm around me," Bernstein explained. "I said, 'I'm your advance man.
Hill, we really ought to talk.' She said, "'You're right - in Washington
or New York. I'll call you.'"

BLOOMBERG - Something about South Carolina brings out the beast in U.S.
presidential campaigns. . . Among Republicans, the shenanigans this year
include automated telephone pseudo-surveys trashing former Tennessee
Senator Fred Thompson's stance on abortion, mailings claiming Arizona
Senator McCain turned his back on fellow prisoners of war in Vietnam and
a phony Christmas card from former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney
extolling polygamy. . . Democratic candidates have also been targeted.
The campaign of Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, 46, is preparing a
fact sheet to rebut an e-mail campaign falsely alleging that he is a
Muslim. . . "Politics in South Carolina has been, from the very
beginning, since colonial times, kind of a blood sport," said Trey
Walker, who served as the state's Republican Party executive director
from 1993 to 1999 and is now a consultant for McCain. . .

FREEDOM BEAT

STEPHEN LENDMAN, GLOBAL RESEARCH - The Department of Homeland Security
established a new domestic spying operation in 2007 called the National
Applications Office and described it as "the executive agent to
facilitate the use of intelligence community technological assets for
civil, homeland security and law enforcement purposes within the United
States. . . With or without congressional authorization or oversight,
the executive branch is in charge and will let NAO use state-of-the-art
technology, including military satellite imagery, to spy on Americans
without their knowledge. Implementation is delayed, however, after
Committee on Homeland Security Chairman, Bennie Thompson, and other
committee members raised questions of "very serious privacy and civil
liberties concerns." In response, DHS agreed to delay operating
(officially) until all matters are addressed and resolved.

LABOR

UNION CITY - Amtrak workers could strike the national rail system as
early as January 30. Armed with a Presidential Emergency Board
recommendation that Amtrak agree to the union position, bargaining
resumed between Amtrak and several unions. Amtrak workers have gone
eight years without a new contract, and if they can't reach agreement,
there could be a nationwide Amtrak strike January 30th.

URBAN

CIVIL RIGHTS COALITION - A United Nations official who has toured parts
of Louisiana and Mississippi devastated by Hurricane Katrina says the
thousands of victims of the storm resemble poor people displaced by
natural disasters in other parts of the world. "Whether you're displaced
in a rich country or a poor country, what remains the same is you need
to get the help, the assistance of the authorities, of the communities,
to be able to restart a normal life, and the people I have met are not
there yet," said Walter Kalin, the UN secretary general's representative
on the human rights of internally displaced persons.

RELIGION & ITS ALTERNATIVES

AP - A Texas museum that teaches creationism is counting on the auction
of a prehistoric mastodon skull to stave off extinction. The founder and
curator of the Mt. Blanco Fossil Museum, which rejects evolution and
claims that man and dinosaurs coexisted, said it will close unless the
Volkswagen-sized skull finds a generous bidder. . . Heritage Auction
Galleries says the skull is estimated to be 40,000 years old, and
projects it will fetch upward of $160,000.

MID EAST

JIM HIGHTOWER - Bush's general, David Petraeus, who was sent to Iraq
last year with a surge of more troops to produce quick results, has now
said that a 50-year U.S. presence there would be a "realistic
assessment." And, indeed, well before the surge, the Pentagon was
building a dozen permanent American bases in Iraq. Then comes Sen. John
McCain, a big backer of Bush's surge, declaring that he supports an
ongoing occupation and permanent military bases there. He even has a
fantasy that you and I would be happy with that, declaring: "I don't
think Americans are concerned if we're there for 100 years or 1,000
years or 10,000 years," as long as we don't have too many troop deaths.

FURTHERMORE. . . .

THE LOCAL, SWEDEN - A kilt for professional men recently introduced in
Sweden features roomy pockets needed to carry necessary tools and allows
the worker to make a striking fashion statement at the same time. . .
"We initially launched the kilt as a sort of experiment. We thought only
a small number of daring men would wear it. But it proved to be
surprisingly popular," says Susanne Kristianson of Blåkläder, the
company from Svenljunga, western Sweden, behind the unconventional work
wear. . . The unconventional garment is especially popular among
carpenters: it features two reinforced nail pockets, a loop for carrying
a hammer and a knife holder. One of Sweden's largest manufacturers of
heavy-duty and protective clothing for men, Blåkläder sells its new
workingman's kilt nationwide; it is also listed as a regular item in its
product catalogue. The garment was lauded as "Fashion Product of the
Year" in late October 2007 by TEKO, the Swedish Textile and Clothing
Association.
