A chorus of kids on YouTube has a holiday message for the Bush administration, Congress and toy manufacturers.
Set to the tune of the holiday classic “Jingle Bells,” the kids plead:
Toxic toys, toxic toys.
Make them go away.
Please don’t bring us toxic toys
This year on Christmas day-ay.
Toxic toys, toxic toys.
They will make us sick.
Better check the recall list
And notify St. Nick.
Over the past year, we’ve seen headlines about lead-tainted toys and other toxic products hitting our store shelves—usually made in China for U.S. manufacturers seeking the cheapest labor possible. Tens of millions of well-known and popular toys have been recalled.
The video is the newest addition in the United Steelworkers (USW) campaign: ”Protect Our Kids—Stop Toxic Imports.” The campaign features ”Safe Home Events” in which parents, with the help of USW safety experts, can test their kids toys for lead. The campaign also includes distribution of home lead testing kits and an online petition calling on the government to fix the broken regulatory system and unfair trade polices that have created the flood of toxic toys and other tainted products coming into the U.S.
As the kids sing, the first thing parents need to do is:
Check where toys are made
When Santa loads his sleigh.
If it’s not American, they
Could contain some lead.
Call your congressman.
This what you say:
Stop letting all this
Poison stuff into the USA.
Check out the video and follow the kids’ advice, because you don’t want your children to end up like the holiday signers—gasping and then collapsing into to a heap.
