Wild Cat Blues

Among the mega malls and sprawling asphalt of the Texas Gulf Coast, the ocelot struggles to survive. Only around 80 of these spotted cats remain in the U.S. -- and dwindling habitat coupled with an increase in road kills have put the ocelot on a dangerous path to extinction.

In the latest Defenders Magazine, read about the small group of dedicated conservationists working to ensure a brighter future for these spectacular felines.

Last month, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson announced an immediate suspension of his state’s involvement in the so-called “three strikes” policy on the removal of wolves accused of killing livestock. With only 58 wolves in the wild, Gov. Richardson’s decision gives a boost to sensible wolf recovery in the Southwest.
