OUTLYING PRECINCTS

AP - Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said Friday that he
misspoke when he said he spent as much time, if not more, at ground zero
exposed to the same health risks as workers combing the site after the
Sept. 11 attacks. . . The former New York mayor upset some firefighters
and police officers when he said Thursday in Cincinnati that he was at
ground zero "as often, if not more, than most of the workers.". . . "I
was there working with them. I was exposed to exactly the same things
they were exposed to. So in that sense, I'm one of them," he told
reporters at a Los Angeles Dodgers-Cincinnati Reds baseball game.
Fire and police officials responded angrily, saying Giuliani did not do
the same work as those involved in the rescue, recovery and cleanup from
the 2001 terrorist attacks, which left many workers sick and injured.

BEHIND THE BUSHES

PROGRESS REPORT - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer say Bush "has
presided over the largest overall increase in inflation-adjusted federal
spending since Lyndon B. Johnson." In six years, the administration
turned the "projected 10-year budget surplus of $5.6 trillion when it
took office" into "more than $3 trillion in additional debt." During
this time, Bush allowed Congress to "spend money like a drunken sailor,"
as Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) recently described it, by failing to veto a
single spending bill sent to him when members of his own party
controlled Congress.

FURTHERMORE. . . .

ZOGBY - Nearly three in four (74%) say it's important to them to know
the country of origin for the all types of products they buy, but even
more - 85% - say knowing where their food comes from is important. But
for the vast majority of Americans it's about more than just wanting to
know - 94% believe consumers have a right to know the country of origin
of the foods they purchase, a new Zogby Interactive poll shows. One in
three (34%) would pay up to 10% more for U.S. food and nearly half (46%)
would be willing to pay from 10% to 25% more. Just 11% would be willing
to pay 25% or more for U.S. foods over cheaper imported foods.

WONKETTE - Not only are bridges across the nation crumbling, but now our
government buildings are collapsing in the middle of the day. The
courtyard of Columbia Plaza leads to the State Department's SA-1
building, and yesterday afternoon its outdoor ceiling collapsed onto
panicked drivers below. No one was hurt, but several cars were damaged
and the ground floor entrance will be closed for the remainder of the
week. First Lady Laura Bush immediately showed up on the scene to calm
the victims and join the survivors in a moment of silent prayer for the
lost cars. President Bush is expected to tour the site this weekend, and
in a press conference today he express deep concern about the tragedy,
immediately attacked congressional Democrats for not providing enough
plaza ceiling oversight, and then announced his intention to veto any
parking garage roof tax increases.
